Im not saying you are wrong here but I do know for a fact that 6061-T6 is a designation for Aluminum I have never seen or heard of Stainless 6061-T6 and I just did a search on it and could not find anything on this. I also doubt it that Ford would make a drive shaft that is more exspensive then both aluminum and steel combined. I mean I really could not even fathom what Ford would charge for a SS Driveshaft 3" in diameter

Ford has been using aluminum driveshafts on long wheelbase vehicles for a while. I have a 98 E150 conversion van that has an aluminum shaft. I know because I just replaced the U-joints.

6061-T6 is aircraft grade aluminum. I've bought several hundred pieces of it in the last few years. Magnets will "stick" to any ferrous or nickel metal, stainless steel is nothing more than ferrous iron with certain alloys that prevent corrosion, stainless is a misnomer it will rust if not taken care of.

You will never see a stainless steel driveshaft, stainless steel does not have any flexibility and will crack with very low amounts of tension on it. Its pretty but useless.

Aluminum flexes better than steel, doesn't transmit noise like steel, and like stated above is much lighter so it reduces driveline drag.

07 Scab F150 with the 8' box 4x2 Heavy Half (8200 GVW). Have not been under it in a while but from what I remember it looked to be out of steel. Definitely 1 piece drive shaft.

Any body have any info why they went to the aluminum unit? Same rear in both trucks (3.55 and LS). I have 18's, his 17's and mine is 4x4, his 4x2.

Any thoughts?

It is a one piece DS, in the event that anyone is interested.
