On my 68 Ranger CS the nut is 1.285" across the flats, use 1 5/16" socket or box wrench. This is Ford box conversion from a Bendix.

If you remove the pitman arm (use a puller not a pickle fork) apply anti sieze to the splines before assembly, torque nut then retorque 20 miles later as the pitman will work up the taper, nut torque will drop to like 20 ft/lbs. I would retorque again a week later.

Torque specs in a 1972 Chilton's Manual for Ford Cougar, Mercury and T-Bird with a Ford Torsion Bar Box they spec 150 to 225 ft / lbs torque. I say wow that's high and must be for a dry spline also. With anti-sieze on the sector and pitman spline I used 90 ft / lbs and retorqued a couple times days later until the torque stayed at 90 ft / lbs, this is what I used so your on your own with a torque figure that is. The pitman arm is tight but I still want to be able to remove it in the future. At 90 ft / lbs it took alot of pressure to get pitmsan off with a 3 jaw puller with anti sieze.
