Talking Quick flat tow question

Hey all Im heading to Idaho this weekend in my 98 eddie bauer explorer. I have pulled a lot of things with other vehicles that were already setup for towing. On the explorer I dont have a tow package just the bumper which says its rated for 3500 pds. A Scout II weighs around that much. Id like to tow it with a tow bar back from Idaho to here in Kansas which is around 1100 miles. So here are the questions.
1. Can I do that with the bumper not a tow package? It says its rated for that weight but I didn't know if that actually meant much.
2. Think Ill utterly destroy my 6 cylinder? I have over drive I can turn off.

Any help or suggestions would be great. I need to move this scout or sell it which I dont want to do.

Cool

Well never mind I've found the vehicle weight is more like 4000-4500.

BOO!

I think you'll be fine as long as you don't try to pull over 55-60 mph. I would invest in a Class III receiver hitch, though. You definitely don't want to pull using your bumper. Of course, steep mountain passes would be a strain on the Explorer and all bets would be off.
