Question Need Help with engines??????

I have recently purchased an 85 F-150 4x4 with a 351w and C-6. Engine is knocking bad so I need to find something else to throw in it. A coworker has a beat up 77 f-150 that runs like a banshee. He hasn't had it very long and doesn't know what engine is in it. Question, what engines where put in a 77 4x4 f150? Could it possibly have a 351w? Which of these would bolt up to a c-6? And which will have the same motor mounts as my 85 351w? Need to throw an engine in in the next couple weeks and don't want to run into big problems? Thanks for any advise!!!

The 77 has either a 351M or a 400. They are completely different from your 351W, nothing will interchange.

You will need a 351W or a 302.

Ok this may seem like a stupid question but doesn't the 351M/400 and the 351W (and the 302 share the same bell housing configuration? Besides how different can the motor mounts be between the two trucks? I guess I am trying to figure out if he got "the whole" 1977 could he steal the needed parts off the 77 to mount the engine in a 1985? Thanks! Hey its been a while since I have had to use my brain for something other then "put this wire here and that wire there!" LOL

The 351M/400 have the same bell housing configuration as the 385 series engines (370/429/460).

I suppose he could swap the entire driveline out of the 77 into the 85 if his emissions laws allow it,but that would be a lot of hassle considering how easy it would be to find another 351w,they are a popular engine, and more desirable than a 351m,IMO anyhow

No they don't

There can be major differences ...especially if the frames are different.
They never put the 351M/400 (which as its own engine mounts) in the 85

I guess I am trying to figure out if he got "the whole" 1977 could he steal the needed parts off the 77 to mount the engine in a 1985?

Possibly, It depends on the frame specs.

OK I have been out of "the loop" for a while (roughly 22 years), and I have forgotten a bunch of things! Funny how a 20 year relationship with a blood sucking leech will do that! Besides Ex wife's can be funny that way! Thanks for the info!

To the best of my knowledge, the 351W was used in vans of the era. If an F-150 had a 351 cu.in. engine from the factory, it was a 351M.

That's correct Only E-series vans had W's. E-150's
