Need some QUICK answers! What gas mileage do 460's get? HUH HUH huh?
Hey guys, I got a lead on a 1991 F250 extended cab for sale with about 140,000 miles, it has the E4OD automatic tranmsission, is rated a 3/4 ton, is TWO wheel drive. I'd love to have one of these to replace my Bronco, mainly due to MUCH more cargo area, and more stable handling at highway speeds wtih the longer wheelbase, and still has a back seat to boot, which we need for our family.
It is for sale 'cheap' (around $1500) because the owner says he was pulling a 5th wheel trailer and "a transmission seal went", apparently began p_____sing the tranny fluid out as fast as you can pour it in, hence it's not currently driveable. He thinks the seal gone is called the input shaft seal. (but - who knows if that's really the problem???). I imagine part of the reason for the price is the fact it's currently in storage about 150 miles from his home, because the tranny problem occurred on a trip he took, and he couldn't drive it back. He has family in the area though, so I assume it's stored at their place while he tries to sell it.
ANYHOW, my NON-overdrive '89 Bronco gets around 10 miles per gallon. The thought of a 460's fuel consumption almost scares me silly! I had an older window van quite a number of years ago with a 460 and it REALLY ate the fuel, but also did NOT have overdrive. Anyhow - I need to find out what gas mileage would be realistic. I drive pretty tame, but my wife likes to "put the pedal to the metal" at times.
And - also if this sounds like a decent deal, or if I'm being a sucker by even consdering it. Please give me your opinions and input - the more the better!!!
Mucho thanks!!!

I think there are folks on these boards that would accurately report that their own 460 gets 4 mpg, 5mpg, 6mpg... up to 15 mpg, 16mpg, maybe even 17mpg. My own 460s have hit every number in that range at one time or another.
I don't think you'll get a quick, accurate answer... but if its 2wd, has OD, is fuelie, and you keep your foot out of it, you're on the right track and I don't think it will suck more than the Bronco has been.

I have an 1985 F350, 460 CID with 4 barrel carb. manual 4 speed with the low 1st gear. Has 4.10 rear end gear
at 65 MPH at 2900 RPM, stock dia tires it gets 7-8 MPG
I can pull a house and it still get 7-8 MPG.
I am going to put a 3.07 rear gear in it to see if I can improve the MPG.
What rear gear does the one your looking at have?
Is is a carb motor or EFI?
I think the trans cost will kill you. Need a good C 6 trans and change the rear gear.

The '94 I had would get 6 to 8 mpg towing the gooseneck and up to 15 mpg "unloaded" on the big road in generally flat terrain. It was 4WD and had an E4od with 3.55 ls gearing. I put 285,000 miles on it selling lumber and building materials and it worked 'till it quit. It depends on your right foot, terrain and the load you normally haul when "unloaded". I had a high lift jack and tools with me all the time as well as a headache rack, bed extender t-bar. The front seal is fairly easy to replace, but you will not know how much damage the pump suffered. If you really want it make an offer you can live with if you have some exposure to repair cost.

I can tell you from my expierience that my 96 f250 4x4 E4OD 460 got 9-10 on the hiway in cruise. Not a big problem for this size of rig.
Now as for the tranny problem. Go look at the truck. If the owner was towing and the tranny over heated the fluid would expand an come out of the over flow
that is ( of all things) inside of the front of the tranny. It will pxxx out of the
front of the tranny( lo and behold) as if the front seal is shot.
I had my truck serviced and the dipsxxt overfilled the tranny. Overheated and the excessfluid ended up in my driveway.

92 F240 4X4 SC long bed ZF5 sp stock tires and a camperette. Weighs 7400 lbs with one tank filled and with the stuff I normally pack. I get 12 mpg overall so getting the same or better than the 10 your Bronco got should be easy. It all depends on your right foot.
There's also lots of info on here about rebuilding the E4OD transmission yourself if you are inclined to try it. It could save you a bunch.

Mine gets about 12 but it's in an F150. :-)
WRT the trans, that is a common failure on those if trans is overheated. The seal in question I call a converter seal since it goes around the torque converter hub. Anyway, it does require trans R&R to replace but the trans may be OK. Oftentimes, the seal will distort and leak when hot but will seal up again when the trans cools. You might fill it up with fluid, start up the motor, and see if any comes out. If it's not running out, you may be able to see if the trans still works or not.
OEM seal is gray, replace it with a black or blue one.
