You brought it up in order to rationalize your stand that, since Ford engineers didn't include one, it is completely unnecessary - based on marketing research that says people only expect transmissions to last a certain length of time.
Obviously, as the 4R100 enjoys such a stellar reputation for longevity and reliability, your stand is completely justified - as is your derision of any who dare to disagree with your superior knowledge and rock solid opinions based on complete faith in Ford's production cost decisions.
So, if YOU think it is a waste of money, then don't put one on. Easy.
If you have something useful to help someone make a decision, that would be great. But proclaiming that Ford always made correct decisions with regard to how to build this vehicle and that any and ALL modifications defeat the grand plan of the engineers, does not help make any decisions about transmission filtration.
Just because they left it off does not mean adding one won't be beneficial - just as the decision to remove the engineered and regulated fuel return has most certainly not been beneficial. Yet, according to the claims you have made, Ford would only have removed the regulated fuel return to make the PSD more competitive and better for the consumer.
I didn't mean to stir things up so i am truly sorry! I was just quoting the $175 based on the filter setup from DieselStie that was mentioned earlier in the thread. I know most of us would look for something cheaper if possible.
Jschira is an attorney (which is according to his profile as I have not seen any stats, facts, or studies with sugar pills to disprove this) and is paid good money to argue which can bring up some good discussion.
Anyone who mods a truck AT ALL is just being silly because any mods you make are done by assuming you know more than Engineers - and you can't because they are always right and always make the best decisions for the best product to fit our individual needs based on mass-market surveys.
Well crap!! I must be just completely off my rocker then.
Jschira is an attorney . . . and is paid good money to argue which can bring up some good discussion.
Yes I am to #1, but no, not really to #2.
Looks at the number of posts in this thread and the number of views and tell me that it has not been a thorough discussion. If feathers got ruffled, too bad. You're a big boy. Grow up.
But this is the thread that others will link back to when the topic comes up again (and it will).
Anybody know what the bypass is set at on the dieselsite filter housing?
I can buy either that exact filter housing or another one and make my own trans filter setup. Just need to know what to get the bypass set at. I'm guessing 5psi should do it since the trans oil doesn't get contaminated like the engine oil does and any pressure drop would indicate a problem.

Most of us aren't here to ruffle feathers, in fact I have seen great differences in opinions here without ruffling feathers. What have we really learned by this long winded discussion anyway? Any information I took from this could have been conveyed in a much shorter thread.
That being said, I have a great deal of respect for FTE members. They have taught me a lot and helped when I was in need. No one has ever told me that I NEEDED to do any of my mods and I don't believe I've wasted any money improving (in my opinion) my truck. Need is subjective, my dad lost both of his legs. Did he need them? No, he did without for many years, but I think he wanted them really bad. Most of us don't need most of the mods we do, but they generally improve the situation and some may even increase longevity. I look at what people are doing and use my common sense and good judgement to determine if it is right for me. What should be understood is that we use our trucks for many different purposes, different mods are needed, opps, wanted for our unique situations.
For most of us, modifying our trucks is just good fun and we like to share our experiences. One should always weigh the pros and cons of modding, most of us do and make our decisions accordingly. Thanks to all for sharing, there are some very knowledgeable folks on this board.
Sorry for adding to this already too long thread, but after all that reading I decided to share . Oh yeah, I think extra filtration is a good thing, not really necessary, but I think my truck likes it.
