I thought maybe I was low on tranny fluid....so I just have to drop the rear drive shaft and lube her up ? Is Regular High Temp Grease from my Grease Gun ok ?
The only time the spline "clunk" is heard is when starting from a dead stop.

A clunk "at speed" could be splines, or most probably u-joints or hanger bearing. I'd check those first!

The reason for the "Teflon" grease is because of it's impact resistance. Any lube that's made for that purpose will work, devildog. You can actually use any grease, but it won't last long...maybe a couple thousand miles.

Side note: One of these days I'm gonna break down, drill & tap for a fitting and cut grooves in the shaft...one of these days...

To put in your own grease fitting huh ...?! I've noticed that too...my old Chevys had
Grease Fittings all over and I was ticked off that this SD didn't. I just ripped out a tranny in my buddies 92 Chevy 4x4 and his front spline was bone dry and filled w/ dirt...OMG haha When it makes this clunk sound is it just the spline extending and the pop is just the metal on metal drag or could the keys be stripping ?

That said, it could still be dry splines but there would have to be another factor such as the carrier bearing play or a rubber bushing or something to allow the splines to hold the shaft and then have it push and release to make the clunk (which is probably putting some horrible side-load forces on other bearings in the drive-train.
When you take off, the axle winds up on the leaf springs and pulls on the driveshaft. Lack of lube creates binding until there is enough torque (hence reaction force) to overcome the friction in the spline. On a 2-1 downshift coming to a stop, similar things happens, except torque change during the shift creates the pulling (maybe pushing) force on the spline joint.

Take the entire driveshaft out, and bring it to a driveshaft shop. They can either add the grease fitting, or put a new "unit" in it that has one.

I plan on taking my clunking (since new) driveshaft and having a CV joint put on one end (driveline vibration from new on take-off) and getting a grease fitting put in it.

Now, do I strap it to the top of the Cougar, or just run around in front-wheel drive with the Superduty? .....

Both, imo. When you lose that plastic-type coating on the male splines, then there's too much tolerance (play) between the mating splines. It "comes unhung"...so to speak.

I broke the rear-most u-joint (of 6) in my '74 highboy one day. Took out the exhaust with it Unbolted it, put it in 4WD and left.

It was rather funny watching other peoples' faces while peeling out at traffic lights with both front tires... this was 20 years ago. It was weird enough to see a FWD car, much less an F250

Thats why I have a Wally-World sized bag of Zip Ties handy all the time. I'll stick her on there when I get off work. I'd rather just use a large bolted clamp to keep that boot from slippin, zip ties are fine till now. Not to mention my license plate came off....redneck engineered License Plate holders don't last forever, oh well...its cheap...how i like it.

I remember when you said this on the last thread and I thought to myself: One of these days I'm gonna break down, drill & tap for a fitting and cut grooves in the shaft, too...one of these days...
