Factory Turbo questions
On my 93 7.3 IDI I have the factory installed turbo. I have read in old posts on this site that this is actually a dealer installed item and that the turbo is an ATS product.
Is this information correct?
I was also wondering how much boost these turbos put out.
Also what is the factory hp and tq numbers for this truck and how does that compair to the 7.3 powerstroke?
Thanks yall,
Dustin

The wastegate equiped turbos will put out more boost at lower RPM than the non wastegated turbos will.
The reason is the wastegated turbos will open the wastegate at high RPM's which keeps the boost down to safe levels.
The non wastegated turbos had to be designed with a max boost level that was safe for the engine, which left them a little slow to boost at lower RPM's.
The 93 and 94 turbo 7.3's were from the factory.
The turbo system was designed by ATS and re-engineered by FORD, which was not a good thing.
Boost numbers over 14 or 15 PSI and the head gaskets will be gone in an IDI motor in short order.

Factory max. boost on the 93 factory garrett turbo was 7.0 psig. This is when the waste gate starts opening and limits boost.
The 2-1/4" exhaust is seriously undersized, this will be the next project on my 93', the biggest bang for my buck in terms of power and fuel economy.
The suction of the turbo inlet is also too restrictive. I went to a K&N replacement filter, got rid of the Factory air scoop and used a 4" marine exhaust hose to pipe the turbo filter housing to the vicinity of the raditor (on the drivers side). It it not ideal yet, one of these days I will get the DS ram intake built to get perfect cold air intake.
