Is there a way to increase the fuel mileage on a 97 Expedition?? I heard that a K & N air filter will add a few miles. A guy at a store told me that if you change the fuel filter to a different kind it would improve mileage as well anyone heard of this??? What is the typical MPG for a 5.4 engine in town and highway??
Well what kind of mileage are getting now? The Expedition isn't exactly the best on gas to begin with. The best ways to increase mileage is to open up the airfilter, open up the exhaust, and switching to an electric fan.
If you want better than 13 city and 18 highway, if that is what you are getting now, which is good for a 97' then you will have to by a car. If you are getting worse than above mentioned, I would consider fuel filter, plugs, air cleaner etc... The only thing that will help you any more than this is your right foot. Don't feel to bad my 03 Cobra with a heavy right foot does worse than they Expy.

I went from 19 with my Expy on the highway to 23 mpg. I changed the plugs, wires, syn oil, syn transmission fluid, new fuel filter, K&N, and opened up the air flow before the airfilter. I drilled some holes into the air box and it increased the seat of the pants power and increased my mileage. Forgot also, I removed my roof rack (air drag), and moved my XM antenna under the front cowl to get it out of the airflow. I know it sounds like a lot of work but I drive 180 miles round trip to work each day. I am saving about 15 bucks a week by doing all these things. Plus I will hopefully avert any future failures and will prolong the life of my truck.
I have a 98 expedition and put a K&N in and didn't see any differance. On top of the fact that its was a bugger to get seated because its bigger than a stock filter. If you decide to try a K&N filter don't use compressed air on it to clean it. That makes for a $40 mistake.
With the ever increasing price of gas I have started to drive slower. By slowing down to 65 mph with the cruise control set, I reached 19 mpg on my 98 with 5.4l engine which will get 16-17 mpg at 70-75 mph.
