Rear Main Seal Leak on 302.

My 78 302 engine has always had a slight leak but now it is getting worse than ever. I know these seals are noted to go on Fords. So what should I be prepared for if I decide to fix this leak. Does the tranny or engine have to come out?
Thanks for suggestions.

Yeah, you need the fly wheel or flex plate out of the way. You can then pry out the old seal and then tap in a new one. I always put a film of silicone around the outside, more for lubication than anything, and I also put a bead of grease around the inside of the seal were it contacts the crank, so it doesnt get damaged or burnt on start up.

My next question is does any of the of the shelf stop oil leak bottles of oil work? Maybe to help swell the seal?
