Just wanted to show that u can fit 31's on a 2wd Ranger with minimal lift. On my '93 ranger those little 14's just didn't do it. I love the way it looks now with 31's. There is a 2" homemade coil spacer lift in the front and a pro comp add a left in the back. The wheels and tires are 31x10.50-15 Yokohama Geolander A/T + 2 on and 15x8 Cragar Series 398 Black Soft 8 with 4" back spaceing. Also added a rear axle out of a '95 ranger to get 4.10's and 10" drums. The best part about all this nothing rubs!!!!
There you go Zach, I was hopeing someone would post that has done this lift, tire, and gear swap just to help you. It still looks like he could use another inch in the front to level the truck, also the rear of the fender opening looks alittle close to the tire. He says it doesn't rub, so it may just be the piture. Also Todder53, how did the swap effect your mpg? Thats an issue were trying to resolve at present. I say it won't effect mpg that much, and another member say's it will, what's your experience? Thank you somuch for posting your truck, I think you both could benifit from a good lsd to complete your package, or do you have one? THANKS AGAIN!!
I'm going with the 3" lift...so hopefully it will work out with more space...I'm still nervous, my 31" measurements don't leave much space, but we'll see.
Yeah it did, but on my 93 they still use a gear to drive the speedo and there is a couple different gears u can put in. There is also a math thing u cause use to get the right gear. I am puttin a 4" rough country lift but i wanted the tires on right now and my lift is 3 weeks out on back order. Also with that coil spacer the camber is way off lol, but u can get a new alignment eccentric cams with adjustable degrees that goes on the upper ball joint from Mako Off road products to correct the camber. It turns those 31 just ok on stock gears but the 4.10s will run me at the same rpms in 4th gear so i should lose to much on mpg.
My 02 jeep wrangler had a 2.5 4 cylinder with 4:11's, and I ran bfg ko's 31/10-50. It did fine, I didn't notice any real difference in power, but it through my speedo off by about 5mph, I just corrected in my head, but others with 4:11's, and 31's say 4:56 is the way to go on a 4 banger. My buddy swapped in 4:56's in his 95 wrangler, and I drove it, it made a huge difference from the way mine felt, it was stronger in 4th, and 5th gear, didn't have to down shift as much. But those of us with 4.0 rangers are fine with 4:10's.
Handyman, the key is the speed at which you hit the hill.
My truck is perhaps less tired than yours, but it is a bit heavier, too (extended cab). If I'm not hauling anything, I can make it up most hills without downshifting, provided Johnny Law isn't watching.
Now, if I have to stop at the bottom of a hill, I may not see third gear until the top, however far that might be...
I know whatcha mean! If I hit a hill doing 65 in OD, I'm guaranteed to have to downshift about 1/8 mile up the hill, depending on how steep it is. Which 4th gear at 65ish MPH is running 3000 RPM, which is close to oil burnin RPM for my truck! Now if I hit the same hill doing 75 or 80, which is warp speed for my Ranger in it's condition, I might make it a half mile up the hill before it's time to downshift again. Which I guess I can't complain. My 95 will hold it's speed up a hill in OD, but if I want to accelerate a little, it will pull out of OD.
Now if it wouldn't burn oil when I get it past 3000-3500 and over RPM, I would definately run it around there and would get a lot more power. But as it is now... no chance!
