I finally got the codes for my check engine light. 1.) EGR Valve Inoperable 2.) DPFE Sensor 3.) #4 misfiring setting code (?) They wanna charge me $608.34 to do all that under a major tune up...is it worth it?
Heck yeah. I'd get the baby fixed in a blink for that price. The Windstar is better and more reliable that a Caravan. That price sounds very reasonable to me. Consider, that in buying something newer, you are really just paying to avoid the problems at hand. To me, the choice it clear. I can either have a paid for vehicle, with lower insurance rates, and be able to control its maintenance. Or I can basically fix all its problems for $20,000+ by buying a new vehicle. In about the same amount of time, it will end up in the same condition, and it will often be about the time you finish paying for it that it starts to have problems. If you buy a car on a loan, then you are required to have complete coverage in most states. This combines with intrest means that you pay double what the car is worth by the time you finish paying off the loan.
Do you know the exact codes that were recieved and not just the descriptions?
How many miles on your van? Have the spark plugs and fuel filter been replaced recently?
The most common cause of an EGR problem is a bad DPFE sensor. It will take you about 5 minutes to replace.
The misfire is quite likely caused by a bad spark unless they are pretty new.
Mileage is 122,000. I have recently replaced the fuel filter and spark plugs. The codes were PO304 & PO401 (?The last code was scribbled so it was hard to read)
The P0304 code is for a cylinder 4 misfire. Cylinder 4 is the on the front bank, on the left. I'd replace the spark plug and see if it comes back.
The P0401 is usually caused by a bad DPFE sensor. It's on the front of the intake manifold. It is a squarish looking thing with 1 electrical connector and 2 hoses on it. The hoses run from the DPFE to the tube that goes from the exhauast manifold to the EGR valve. The DPFE has been changed up by Ford. I would get the latest one from your dealer.
