Fog Light Question - 2000 F150 2WD

OK here is my first question, I'm a rookie to this site. I have a 2000 F150 2WD 4.6L. extended cab short bed. I want to install aftermarket fog lamps. Does the wiring allready exsit in the cab/engine compartment or do I need to run my own wires? Thanks for any advise offered.

I don't know for sure, but I doubt that the wiring exists. Years back, most vehicles were wired for all available options. Lately however, manufacturers seem to have decided that this is a cost which, although small, is still an unnecessary cost.

I think the only way to tell is to look.

I have a 2003 F150 which I added factory fog lights to. Mine was pre-wired with all the relays and fuses in place. I just had to swap out the factory headlight switch with a factory fog light/headlight switch. It plugged right in and my fog lights worked with no other wiring or relays needed.

If you crawl under the front of your truck and look in the area where the factory fog lights would be, you should be able to see if the connectors are there. Mine were about four or five inches away, attached with a plastic push type holder. I just removed the plastic holder and pulled the wires down to where they had to go.

Can you tap into the factory wiring from the dash (behind light switch) without replacing the light switch? I plan on running mine as DRLs with my own switch, so I won't need the factory light switch.

they dont come prewired....but you can run your own set of wires...usually when you buy these fog lights they come with wiring harness and switch and relay.....make sure you tie your connections well and run them away from engine as possible. speciall your live cable ! then add an inline fuse if it does not have one already....

goodluck pal!

Amazingly enough, I actually do have the wiring there...
Please read my post and tell me what you think.

On my 2003, when I removed the factory headlight switch to install the factory foglight/headlight switch, it was a direct replacement. The fog light wires were already there, just not plugged into the original factory switch. If your wires are there, you should be able to wire them into your replacement switch.

I remember reading on the board here there is a way to modify the factory foglight/headlight switch to have the foglights stay on like DRL, or on with the bright lights also. You might want to try a search for the modification of the factory switch and see if that would do what you are trying to do.

Yes, I have found that info on DRLs as fogs and fogs with high beams. Very helpful. However, those are good for light switches with fog light control and I plan on keeping my current switch (without fog light control) and using my own switch (since it will be DRL, I will probably never turn it off).

When I look behind the light swith, there are no loose wires. Everything is plugged in. Since the new switch with fog control is a direct replacemnt...this would mean that the wires that run to fog lights are already there and plugged in, but the light switch doesn't run power to them. I was thinking I could cut them from the harness and run my own power to them from my own switch. I just need to know which ones they are. I see the colors at the fog light location. Would I just find the matching ones?

I did mine about 3 years ago and am trying to remember the set up correctly. I think like you said, the wires are part of the harness, and with the factory switch they were not getting power. Once I replaced with the foglight/headlight switch, they got power. I don't remember if the replacement switch had extra prongs on the back for the fog wires, or if they got the power from within the switch. I THINK it had extra prongs. The wires WERE the same color behind the switch as they were under the front bumper at the fog light location.

Hope this helps, I have the service manual on C/D somewhere around here and will check the wire diagram if I can find the disc.

Yes, that helps. So if I can find the same color wires at the harness as at the plug, I'll be ok. I know that one of the wires is black and the other is tan with orage stripe (or faded red stripe). Do you remember if the black is to ground or if I need to tap that too? If you find the diagram I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

We just moved in the last six months into an apartment, and are buillding a house which will be ready in another month or so. I am afraid I have already put all my manuals and such into storage, I can not find any of them around here. I am almost sure the black does have to be grounded, but you better see if anyone else can give you a definite answer on that. Like I said, everything including fuses and relays were already factory installed in my truck even though I did not have factory foglights, so you might want to check those fuse locations and relays also.
