1985 F250 4x4 supercab with 6.9L motor. Truck starts right away and then stalls. After that you have to crank it like crazy to get it to start then it runs perfect. It seems like there is fuel at the fuel filter but not at the injectors. Is it loosing prime or is there something in the IP giving me headaches. Changed fuel filter and this did not correct problem. What can I check? Pump was rebuilt 2 years ago and problem stated over the winter. Glow plugs are OK.
I'm not sure if the 85 is the same as my 89, but I had this problem last week. If there is a return line from the #1 injector to the fuel filter, plug the fuel filter header with a brass plug, and stuff a bolt down the return line and clamp it tight. It will stop the air leak there. It worked for me. Do a search here in this forum, there are a lot of threads about this problem. Hope that helps.
cuttressb,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
There is air getting into the fuel system and the fuel in the filter is draining back to the tank.
Blocking the return line to #1 injector and the filter is a good start.
Also the 85 had a water seperator on the firewall beside the brake booster. Is yours still on the truck? If it is, stick a bolt in the end of the drain line.
Both of these are common places for air to get in the fuel system.
The fuel seperator has been disconnected prior to this probllem. I tried cutting the return line between the fuel filter and the #1 injector and plugged both ends. The brass fitting at the filter feeds the IP and has a tit on it for the return line so I am not sure how I could plug that other than cutting the line and pluging both ends. Still would not start though maybe I have to bleed the injectors to get the air out. Any thoughts or am I on the wrong track?
Finaly got the problem fixed. It ended up being the lift pump or low pressure pump.Even though the pump looked good and wasn't leaking it was not holding the pressure in the line. When I went to change it there was no fuel in the line going to the filter. Thanks for the help. No more problems starting.
did you try spinning the motor over with the line off ? mine will shoot diesel over the fender but if you leave it sit for a while you dont see any fuel in the line. is the pump supposed to hold the pressure to the ip after you kill it.
