Don't feel bad, you didn't waste my time. I wish we would have had sites like this when I did my first swap. There was alot of trial and error parts fitting back then. Good luck and enjoy the power.

no waste of time here. sometimes you just need to walk away for a little while and amazingly things drop in to place (doesn't always work LOL )

The 351M/400 Starter is the same as the 460. As previously mentioned, you can take the later externally balanced flywheel from a 460, and have the balance changed. You can save yourself a few dollars by grinding down the cast in weight, and then drop it off for balancing. If you were really cheap, you could use a bubble style tire balancing machine, or a lawnmower blade balancer to get you close enough. It seemed like everytime I got a 460 crank balanced, I always got charged extra for them to weld in a heavy weight so the thing would balance out, so by based on my professional degree of assumption guestimation engineering, if the motor managed to live 200K+ and 30+ years with an out of whack crank, it can live with a bubble balanced flywheel.

/two cents.

Yes, it's been on the road for quite a while now. I bought a post-1978 flywheel (external balance), took it to a machine shop and had the weight removed and the flywheel neutrally balanced. Works great with the internally-balanced 460 and the ZF5-42 tranny. Only real problem I had (ate my lunch for a loooong time) was that the manager at the local parts place where I was buying my starters went to a different supplier (lousy quality and horrible quality control). I went through several different part numbers before I 'discovered' the problem. Haven't had a starter problem for about a year (called part place corporate and B***hed big-time. Quality of starters came back up.

I love the 460 (edel. 650/ZF5/3:70 rear) with the overdrive. I can pull 'bout any thing I want (got 3/4 ton rear springs), pull my car trailer with a 1-ton crew cab on it at 70mph (in overdrive). 'Course the 460 don't give a dang about the load; it gets about 8-9 mpg under almost any condition.

In order to get the ZF under the truck, I had to cut out the cross-member ahead of the tranny and fabricate a new one with a drop so the tranny would fit. I took two tranny hump covers; cut up one to make a taller rise in the original hump to clear the top of the tranny. Only problem is, the engine and tranny have to be pulled as a unit to get the tranny out (no big deal; I pull the 12 or so bolts and remove the complete doghouse -- makes removing them a snap).

I like this set-up so much, I doubt I'll ever go back to an automatic. This truck ('67 cab/doghouse on '70 frame) is my daily driver, and it never fails to start or move.

Good To hear OldFords!! I have just inherited a new 460 long block that's been in storage 15+ years and want to make the girl sing like she should. What Inlet manifold/carb/cam combo did you use?? I have my eye on a Edel 650 thunder series carb and the performer or performer RPM manifold. What would you recomend??

I use my '70 as a daily driver/work truck. So, I haven't done much with the engine; jerked the pan and put main and rod bearings in it when I did the ZF install. It's purty tired, and in need of an overhaul.

I don't think I can help you much with the mods you want to do to your 460. I started 'buildin' engines when I was twelve (Whizzer motorbike). Graduated from the Whizzer to a Ford Model 'A' Four banger; then to Chevy and Ford straight sixes and V8's. I can build one to last 200,000 miles, but don't know much about building one to perform.

I'm sure there are lots of rodders here at FTE that can give you much better advice than I can. In fact, I'll probably keep an eye on your questions so I can learn some things to do to my 1959 F100 (429/C6). I removed the straight axle. cross-member, steering column from it and installed the cross-member, p/s box, p/s steering column, spring perches, trailing arms, etc. from a 1970 F100. The '59 now has a complete 1970 F100 front suspension with after-market dropped I-beams with disk brakes. Some people think I'm crazy for putting the I-beams under a '59, but I tell them that I did it 'cause it was there'. I also 'flipped' the 9-inch to lower the rear of the truck. The whole truck is dropped between 3 and 4 inches.

However, I'm looking for the Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) sub-frame assembly out of a Mark VIII, Cougar, or T-bird (V-8 car) to replace the 9-inch. That would give me Twin I-Beam up front and an rear IRS with an 8-inch differential. I plan to make a show truck out of the '59, hauling it to shows with my '70 F100 460/ZF combo. So I need all the advice I can get on what to do to the 429 to not only show it, but to give it some real power.

Let me know when you get a thread going about your 460. I'll check in often.

Yip - i think that the 460 appeared in the F100 in '73 and then in the F150 from '75 - '79... disappeared for a while and reappeared in F250 in '83...
