Rollpan or bumper?
#2
I know there's a picture of a rollpan on a mid-70's Ford somewhere in my LMC catalog. I don't think it looks very good though because they have this molding that hangs down in the center for the license plate. Some trucks look better with roll pans than others. In my personal opinon though, roll pans may look nice, but if someone rear-ends you, your whole rear end could be damaged, as opposed to repainting/rebending a steel bumper.

The ones without the license plate holder look pretty good IMO, if you have a nice custom tailgate of some sort.....but i can see how they would suck in a rear-end collision....i thought of buying one without the license plate spot, and put the plate onto whatever tailgate i build ..I want to cut a hole in the center of the pan for receiver hitch access, cause im dropping the truck and dont want the hitch to hang too close to the ground.....

I have a rollpan on my 77, I really like it and have got many compliments on it. I don't use my truck for hauling or work so I'm not so concerned about rear end crashes, although it would suck in a rear end collision. I have the one with the plate spot and I don't think it looks too bad. This pan did not come with a plate light and in most if not all states it's the law. I cut a small hole in the pan above the plate spot and mounted a plate light in there so it's completely legal now. here is a pic of the rollpan on my truck, I'll try to post a better pic of it tonight when I get home. -Ed

There is a good tech article about this, with pics. Under the 'articles' link at top, and 'body/appearance' section on the next page.
I personally prefer the roll pan with the plate in the center. There was a past thread with a pickup that had a solid roll pan and the plate frenched into the tailgate - I didn't care for that. But mine is a work horse, couldn't be without my step bumper.

That roll pan looks great. What if you used "nerf bars" of some sort that extended through the rollpan.V-dubs and streetrodders use small "nerf bars " that provide some tow options and jacking mounts but are not big and bilky like a stepbumper.Even a small single tube bumper would provide protection and still look good.

Different roll pan companys make them out of 3 different materials, Steel, Fiberglass, and urethane. I have had all 3 on my chevy trucks, and liked the steel one best- accually welded it solid to the bed sides and blended it all smooth. (But you have to seal up the backside of the welds really good!) you can also just bolt them on- they have the tabs made into them. The Lund brand fiberglass pan was 2nd best, but was destroyed when I got rearended(but steel would have been too), and the urethane type- although flexible, will start to crack after a few years of natures abuse. They also flake the paint off very easy, even with plastic adheasion promoter. If a rock hits the back side of a urethane pan, your losing the paint on the outside. You could try Sir Micheals brand of roll pans, prob better quality than what LMC would have. Look in the back of a truckin, sport truck, or i think another is called Classic Truckin magazine. They always advertize different brands of roll pans in the backs of these mags. Sir Micheals should have the tag light built in- comes with it I think. Also another idea for a tag light, Billet Specialties makes a really trick looking licencse plate frame, with a light built into the top side of it. Comes with all stainless flush mounted hardware, and can even be ordered with a built in 3rd brake light also flush mounted in the top of the frame. Also the whole thing is pollished, then clearcoated, so its maintenence free. Great product I will use again and again.
