Hoping you guys can clear this up. What year did Ford begin putting the 31 splines in trucks? There is all kinds of conflicting info. Specifically, I'm looking a F-100s. I've been told that 31 splines began in 74. Been told by another it was 72. So what was the deal? What trucks had 31 splines? Was it a matter of options? I'm so confused and no one seems to truely know. I need help from Ford truck experts.
I've got a '72 F-100 4x4,it has 31 splines. Original rear end. I know this doesn't answer the question but at least you know that they had them in '72.

the trac-loc was an option available in 1970. on the 70 xlt that i robbed the option cost $107. it was available at 3.25,3.50,3.70, & 4.11 ratios. incidentally the 9 inch in a f100 is actually a 9 3/8 inch rearend and won't fit the 9 inch housing without some modification and is a 31 spline rearend. incidentally neither of mine are n-case rears although i have heard that some were. prior to that i don't know if they are 28 or 31 spline as i don't have any dealer's invoices or a dealership's brochure. my guess is that all traction loc rears were 31 spline from 67 to 72.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Sep-02 AT 05:56 PM (EST)]Just started parting out a '69. Suspected it was a trak lok & removing the "pumpkin" only confirmed that it was. Also 3.70 gears, 31 spline axles and the best surprise; a 4 pinion diff. All original to the truck. Hope this helps.
I just pulled the chunk out of my 70 F100 XLT and it has the original 3.25 4 pinion 28 spline locker in it, Im sure it is a 9in not a 9 3/8, how can you tell the difference I have a few 9" centers laying around to compare.
