Transmission Conversion
I have a customer with a 65 short bed and 390 stick. He would like to convert to a C-6. What all is involed?
1. I understand there are 2 tailhousing lenghts
2. Can I use the stock crossmember or use an aftermarket like Trans-Dapt
3. Speedo cable issues?
4. Customer would like to keep the shifter on the floor, has any one used a Lokar shifter, and will they use the stock shifter hole? or is there something better?
5. Any other issues?
6. Also he has an over/underdrive unit (doesn't know the brand) are all of these bolt on in place of tailhouse?
Thanks Phil
This will probably work to your advantage, especially if you get the C-6 with the longer tailshaft (internal slip joint). If you have the original shortbed driveshaft that is.
2. Can I use the stock crossmember or use an aftermarket like Trans-Dapt?
Yes, you can use the original.
3. Speedo cable issues?
None.
4. Customer would like to keep the shifter on the floor, has any one used a Lokar shifter, and will they use the stock shifter hole? or is there something better?
That hole is not stock, unless it is for a 4 speed.
5. Any other issues?
A car transmission has different shift geometry, so an aftermarket floor truck shifter may have trouble working correctly.
6. Also he has an over/underdrive unit (doesn't know the brand) are all of these bolt on in place of tailhouse?
If it is a US Gear or a Doug Nash, he will find it necessary get a long shaft C-6, and the appropriate extension housing for it. (I once had a Doug Nash on the back of my C-6 in my '66 F-100.)
Hope this helps.
