In-tank Pre-Pump mod discovery/TIP

OK, I got the tank down and out with minimal problems. It was getting dark when I started. Now I've had about 1/4 tank in my truck for a while and been trying to run it down/out. Finally decided this was a waste.
Pulled truck onto ramps and positioned 5gal gas can under front where my fuel filter drain line is to drain fuel and have it for when I get it back together. Opened that valve with little progress as expected. Cycled the key and got things moving but only for about a minute at a time. Did That a few times, then got worried about the drain on the batteries from the GPs heating up or worse yet burning something out.
Epiphany. Ran jumper cables off of battery to area of pump and was about to hook up 2 jumper wires to run the pump w/out the ignition. Surprise, hooked up the positive side jumper first and it fired the pump up. Filled 2 fuel cans to the tune of 12 gals.
Now tank was pretty much empty, drawing air/pumping no more so I was able to get it down by hand by myself without any jacks and just a couple of jack stands.
Just food for thought for all considering this mod in the driveway. Lot easier than trying to run the tank down, and I'll have fuel on hand when it's back in. More to follow. Should have it back in tomorrow.

I wouldn't have thought about that. Running the pump by cycling the key would worry me too. Good tip!

Thanks for the tip. I'm starting my whole fuel mod "program" this weekend.

Key word there is starting. I'm going with a hybrid Cookie-Kwik set up. Carter Pump is on the way, still deciding on a prepump filter. And still gathering my parts and pieces for the rear dual feed. I've read so much info on this stuff over the last few hours that I'm going into serious brain fade. LOL

I know what you mean. I've read so much here that I got to a point I don't know what I should do. I will be doing things a little bit differently than what I've read here. Just soaked it all in and am going with what I think is right. There seems to be a huge fascination with the pre-pump feeder/lifting pump now. I don't buy into it and don't need the additional headaches of another potential failure item. I will simply address the air leak issues that are proven to work and supply the stock pump with gravity fed fuel, no lifting. There will be a pre-pump outside tank filter. I still have issues, but what the he$%. My truck was running great before I dropped the tank, so this better work or my old lady is going to rail me like nobody's business. Since I'm doing a few new things, I'll not elaborate further until I see how they work.

Talking intank mod

I was suprised a while back when I was looking for the fuel systems limits and stalled the lift pump. I couldn't find any fuse or breaker problems. I ran my 48" test lead to the pump with the fuel filter open, what an idiot and the pump took off full speed ahead. Do not try this at home.

That's right, let's not forget we are professionals.

Crap, don't like the sound of that water pump thing. I've still got to flush my system and consider the tranny fluid too. Better do both before they bite me. Still cheaper than a new truck and I happen to like my truck. Somewhere in there is gauges and a chip.

Here's what works for me with my wife:

Me, (knowing I had to do the HPX, AIH and CCV) "Hon, I have to change my oil."
Wife: "Again?"
Me: "Yes"
Wife: "Why? You just changed it not that long ago."
Me: "5000 miles ago..."
Wife: "What's in that box?"
Me:"HPX line...I told you about it."
Wife: "When?"
Me: "Last week...I told you the old line was leaking and I had to wait for the oil change to fix it."
Wife: "I don't remember you saying anything about it, how long will it take?"
Me: "I did tell you...Remember how I told you about the HPOP and the crossover line balancing pressure between the sides of the engine?"(never giving a length of time)
Wife: "You did?"
Me: "Yeah, you seemed interested...Remember I told you I learned how to fix it on that web site?"
Wife: "Oh...yeah, I guess I forgot. Is that what you guys do on there all day long. Are you sure you're not talking to women on there?"
Me: "Nevermind, I'll take it over to the (dealership) and they'll probably fit me in in a couple hours. Where's the checkbook?"
Wife: "If you can do it then that's fine, I guess...Do you need me to help?"
Me: "No, thanks, Honey but, I sure could use a coffee..."

If you have a good battery charger, you can use it to power the pump as well.

Gives you a little more control over the issue of creating sparks with a hot wire from the battery, if that kind of thing worries you.

That's good to hear. I thought about that but was too lazy to go dig it out of the shed, jumper cables were in the truck.

Lol, That's funny. I would substitute "and you say I never listen to you" for the above one and give her some of her own medicine.
