Question for input concerning 71 and 64 F100

Hello. I have started the restoration of a 1971 F-100, 360, but I like the body style of the 64 I just found. I would like some pros and cons of selling the 71 and buying the 64. These are the things I know about the two trucks.

1971 (I own this one now)
(1) 360 in need of piston rings
(2) I have replaced one rear shackle bracket, all the tie rods and centerlink, the control arm bushings, power steering pump, the carb. and a muffler.
(3) The body is in fairly good shape and has a camper shell.
(4) Burns fuel like it's $.20 per gallon (but you all know this about the 360 engine.
(5) Rear blinkers don't work.
(6) Want to ask $1500 for the truck, I paid $300 and have $100 in it total (is that bad).

1964
(1) 1985 (took elec. ign. off and put point in), 302 with no signs of interior difficulty and no oil on the engine (needs a tune-up though).
(2) Body in fairly good shape for a 40 year old vehicle.
(3) Manual steering and brakes (not a problem).
(4) $950
(5) Good wheels and tires.
(6) Everything on the truck works (even the fuel gage).

I know this is a 67-72 forum but I would appreciate any opinions you all are willing to share. Thanks.

Question for input concerning 71 and 64 F100

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Oct-02 AT 09:58 PM (EST)]Just my $0.02 worth...asking $1500 for a truck that is in major need of an engine overhaul seems a little stiff to me. I bought my '67 in great shape and drove it home for $1200. I also bought a '72 parts truck that had a blown tranny for $100. I brought it home, put a battery in it and it fired right up. I ended up swapping the 360 for a 5spd. out of a 1990 for my '67.

If it were me, I don't think that I could sleep knowing I sold that truck for $1500 and whoever bought it was gonna drop at least that much again to have the engine rebuilt.

I agree with you on the 1964's though. My Dad owned one when I was born, I have some GREAT pictures of it too. I just wish I owned it.

Once again, this is just my opinion. I'd be willing to bet if you sold that '71 for parts, you'd EASILY make the money to buy that '64. I might even be interested in some of them.

Question for input concerning 71 and 64 F100

Let me correct something in the (6) part of the 1971, I was sleepy. I paid $600 and have about $1800 in the truck total. But I do understand your point about the engine and would never sell the truck to anyone unless they know everything that is wrong with it (well, the things I know anyway). Thanks for you point of view, I appreciate it.

Question for input concerning 71 and 64 F100

Do whatever is going to make you happy. I'm neck deep in a restomod project on my '69 F100, but my head turns every time I see a 61-63 unibody. Something tells me that my next project will be one of those. I'm too far along on the '69 to stop now, though, so I'm going to complete it.

Overhaul the 71, and drive it. Pass on the 64! These are beautiful trucks but the front suspension and steering are of another automotive era. Keep a lookout for a nice 65-66. They look the same as the 64 and all the modern Ford suspension components will fit up to 1979. Plus you have experience upgrading the 71 and the same rules apply to the 65-66. Then come on over to the other forum. And fix those rear blinkers, and have you checked the stop lights?

Question for input concerning 71 and 64 F100

William, thanks for your comment. Yes I have checked the brake lights and they do work. I don't know exactly what's wrong with the tail lights, but I did get them to work one time and they worked when I bought the truck (some kind of ground problem I think). Any suggestions would be appreciated?

As far as the 64 is concerned, this will upset you all as much as me probably. I go to the guys house today, he lets me test drive the truck, I pull out the money and he says, I was just joking, it's a family truck. Now you talk about wanting to commit battery!!! I could not believe he went through all that and didn't even want to sell the truck.

After that I thought to myself, God must be showing me that I really don't need that truck and that I should continue with the one I already have. Then the message from William, so I will just finish the '71 over time and then think about something else later. I also found out from the chat room that the '85, 302 engine has some interesting challenges with the rear main seal, man that would be a pain. I guess this would end this string since the truck is not available. Thanks for all the information anyway.

Question for input concerning 71 and 64 F100

I have a warm spot in my heart for the '66 style -- it's the first vehicle I ever drove after I got my permit. But I always thought the '72 looked better, and now I have my own.
