Changed Final Drive - Speedo Off?

Greg-I'm glad you found the sensor, and I'm sorry I didn't stress that my info was for an '03. Arts '01 book seemed say the same thing as mine. Ford musta changed this in '00 or '01. Did you find the sensor on the side of the tail shaft housing? That is where my book shows the PSDs VSS. My OSS is right on the top.
Fast-The vans didn't get a tach untill '04, and they changed the instrument clusters to multiplex signal wireing. For all I know, they may have moved the VSS to the rear axle like on the F-Series. Don't know.

Ultra, sensor was on the side of the extension housing, extending outwards. Held in by a bracket secured by a bolt.
Obivously everyone is closed on Sunday, but I removed the gear to bring in tomorrow. There's a lot of web references out there, primarily focused on the Mustangs. Most of them seem to be using the same info:
http://www.finer.com/internet/pages/speedo.htm
http://www.crownvic.net/liquid/speedo_gear.html
My gear is an 18-tooth grey, thus I suggest what I need is the 21-tooth purple, part number D0OZ-17271-B. My only fear is that I also found some Mustang references that stated when you go from the 3.73 to the 4.10 or 4.30 you gotta change out the driving gear, too; that doesn't look like a 7 minute job...I hope that doesn't apply to my tranny. - GA

The mustang guys are likely talking about the 4R70W so perhaps you will be lucky on the 4R100 being different.
Good luck. Let us know what you find out.

I went to a 3.73 rear in my '96 t-bird w/4R70W and didn't have the change the drive gear.
It all depends on what is already in the tranny.
21 tooth doesn't sound too steep of a difference.
On a "truck" tranny you run a good chance of having the right driving gear.
but only trying will tell you for sure

Well, purple it is.
I grabbed the 21-tooth purple drive gear on the way home from work. Installed and test drove it; less than 0.5 miles short after ten mile markers. Shifts fine, cruise works, speedo works, odo is close enough for me...
Nice part about that 4.30: I had to BARELY touch the throttle to keep it at highway speeds. I wouldn't be surprised if the mileage increases, and I can't wait to tow a full load with it! - Greg

RESET the computer! Pull a battery lead for a few hours.
After I put a 3.73 in my '96 t-bird 4.6L (from a 3.27), chanded the speedo gear, and drove it, it flashed the O/D light on me a few times when it downshifted out of OD as I slowed up.
better to let it learn it's new environment then have it try to deal with a new set of circumstances.
maybe
art k.

OK, in the annels of Ford engineering, where does this put us V10 folk? We know the 4R100 is available with a speedo gear, of sorts (if that tranny was really a 4R100).
That would help when retro-fitting a V10 into other vehicles.
Now the problem.
The computer that "knows" about the speedo gear also is the one for the typical restricted E-series intake... tuneable? I hope so...
I'm making a list.
