Unhappy Won't stay running (been sitting) pump?

I recently bought a '87 that has been sitting for about 2 yrs. It was running fine when parked. I dropped a new battery in it, and it turned over just fine, but won't start. I poured gas in the intake and it will turn over and run until that gas burns out. Done that maybe 15 times. How long should it take to prime the system before I look to other idea's as to while it's not getting fuel. Would thef uel pump go out while sitting, or filter cloged? Where are fuel pumps on these trucks? I'm use to my '83 302 w/ on block pump, are these in line and where?
Thanks
Brian

in tank.

could be both fuel filter and fuel pump.

could be sludge in tank.

after 2 years sitting will not be the only problem you will have.

it's dual tank, so it has two pumps? what's the chance of them both being bad?

No, in a 1987 the fuel pump is outside the tank. There is only one. There are two low pressure pumps in the tank, but they are basically there to prime the high pressure pump. If the tank has gas in it, you don't even need them.

Since it's fuel related, I would beg/borrow/steal a fuel pressure gauge and go from there. You didn't say what motor you have, but the V8's need about 35 psi, and the six need 55 psi.

If the pressure is low, change the fuel filter and re-test. Still too low, change the high pressure pump. It can be found mounted to the frame rail near the driver's seat.

the filter is on the inside of the drivers side frame rail under the bed of the truck.

If it sat for two years, the fuel in the fuel filter probably did gum up. Fortunately they are cheap and easy to replace and it's something that should be done from time to time anyway. Hopefully there isn't anything else causing the fuel starving.

Replaced filter, narrowed it down to the pump isn't getting power, now checking relays

Couldn't fix the problem, so I took 12v from the wipers switch and ran wire to it. Runs great.... Now wipers won't shut off... will take it to a electric guru at some point
Thanks for all the input

I know this may sound dumb but it happen to me I picked up a 91 F150 for $500.00 and it had been sitting for a yr or so and had the same problem fuel pumps not getting power ect.. talking to the guy I had bought it off he said before he parked it he put new pumps in it so I check the relay was not clicking or anything so I pulled the hole thing out where I could see all the wires and the relay and there was 2 yellow wires going into the same connector.... they where corrided (broke off) took it all apart resoldered the wires to the connector and I had power thing took off and ran.... This may not be your problem but I would check to see save yourself some $$ Good Luck...
