72' F250 4x4 questions

I found a 1972 f250 4x4 that ran when it was parked but had an ignition problem (so the guy said). It has some rust problems and is missing the box. He wants $100 for it so I don't think I can go wrong. I grew up with a 79' f150 and am familiar with the steering problems and other issues with the 73-79' trucks, but I don't know anything about the 68-72' trucks. Does the power steering on these need upgraded like the 73-77's? What are some problems or big differences I should know about the 68-72' trucks?

72' F250 4x4 questions

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Oct-02 AT 04:51 PM (EST)]It doesn't have power steering but I want to convert it. Apparently the conversion is the same as all the 73-77 f250's. Is it best to use a 78 or 79 steering set up?

What conversion kit are you looking at? Or are talking about just scavaging one out of the junk yard? I have a 68' F100 I want to convert but have not looked for kits yet.

72' F250 4x4 questions

I just took the power steering setup out os a 72 4x2 and put it on 71 F250 4x4. It was pretty easy, the hardest thing was cutting a notch out of the frame so the box would fit and welding a plate in for the box to mount to. I am just a average joe shadetree mechanic, if i did it, anyone can. I don't really know if my setup is the one to go with, but it works. in the future i hope to find something better, like make the power steering out of a late 80's early 90's work, that would be super nice.

Wow, $100 for a 72 F250 4x4 is a steal! I would grab that in a second. Luckily with this great board here you can find pretty much anything and everything you need to know about these trucks. My truck has manual steering, but I know there are lots of people who have changed them out to power steering. From what I understand, you have to find the right donor truck and its simply a matter of bolting on the right parts. Not having done it myself, I have no advice to give as to what kind of donor you have to look for. I think I have also seen places that sell conversion kits. The kits are expensive and in my opinion it takes the fun out of looking for the parts on your own. To each his own. Good luck with your 72!

72' F250 4x4 questions

I'm just plain getting lucky. Like I said earlier the 72' 4x4 f250 is missing a box and has some rust problems in the doors. On my way home I saw two 2wd pickups one of which had a very straight box and cab. Anyway I asked the owner if he would be interested in selling and he said take them both for $100. In the matter of two days I've got 3 pickups for $200. I originally wanted a 73-79 but looks like I'll be joining the ranks of the 67-72 group. I've never driven or riden in a 4x4 f250 of this vintage, I assume they drive like a tank?

Your a lucky dawg! Ive spent thousands over the past 9 years trying to get parts and pieces for my 67/70 ford f-250 4x4. $200 for 3 trucks sounds like your off to a good start.
