Need Help! Aftermarket Tow mirrors!

Hey Gang,

I have an 01 f250 xlt. I just bought a set of tow mirrors from ebay. They are the right mirrors and all but the plug is totally differant. My truck has the square plug and the new mirrors have a round one. What do I do? They don't match for wires either. The factory wires on the back side of the plug are blue, black and red and the new mirrors have yellow, green and purple. I did a search but did not find the answer to this specific problem.

HELP!!!

Thanks everone.

Tim

The adapters came with mine from Ford. But I cut them off to make plug in connectors when I installed my TT mirrors.

Thanks all of you for the replys,

What I need to know is........My factory stock wires are Blue, Black and Red, these control the power mirrors. The wires on the new mirrors are yellow, green and purple. Am I going to burn anything up if I cut off the connectors and try to match them up thru trial and error?

DSL lover,

I saw that thread too, very helpful, but mine is not the same senario.......

Time for a volt meter. The plug in the truck has a common wire, and 2 other colors. Left and right side color codes should be different. In your truck, there should be one wire the same on both sides (most likely black), and the other 2 are different colors. The mirrors work by reversing polarity between the common wire, and each of the other colors. Put your volt meter, or even a test light will work, between the common wire, and one of the other 2. Note where you are operating the mirror switch, such as up/down, or left/right. That will ID where it goes on the mirror. The common on the mirror plug should be the yellow wire. Yellow, and one other wire should move the mirror up/down, or left/right. Use a 12 volt power source, and test to see which does what, make note of which, and connect to same wire in the plug on the truck. Test each function as you go, before putting everything back together.

Dave,

Thanks for the post! IF....I get something backwards, am I going to burn something up? or will the mirror just go down when when I push left?

If you test the wire combo's, and make notes, you should have no trouble getting them right. If you get wires reversed, mirror will go opposite what you think, or nothing at all with wrong combo.

Ok!!

I followed the advise Dave gave me and used my marine battery to figure out which wire did which function. After that it was fairly simple to cut off the harness' and use dircect connections to put them back together....

Put it on together and PRESTO! It works!!!

Thanks to all of you for your help with this project!

Tim
