Hi, I am going to be pulling the 390 out of my 72 camper special and was wondering where I should hook the hoist chain onto the engine? Any help would be great.. oh, and I am leaving the exhaust manifolds on...
I used the large holes in the front and rear of heads to lift mine out with no issues tranny attached. This allows for only two positions (a bit tipsy) but I had no issues coming out or replacement.
As Bob states, opposite ends of the heads. Also make sure that you get the hardened bolts. Grade 5 or Grade 8. Your motor will be tipping the scales @ more than 800 lbs so be careful!

Myself, I have allways used the intake bolts, middle of the intake next to the carb, with the carb off and the carb holes pluged. I have lifted many FE's with the trans with no problems.

I think it's really worth the money to buy and use a carb mount plate. They work with either iron or aluminum manifolds. You just replace your four carb bolts with grade 8s and yank it out of there. The balance is better than with the "across the engine" chain method.
