in my 1970 1/2 ton custom the oil light turns on when it is idling at a red light for a little while. It has a 302 with a 3spd converted to floor with very low gearing. The motor runs great. Is this common on these old fords.
Well it could be a weak/worn out pressure switch. I would stick a direct reading guage on it and see what the pressure actually is.
Older motors can have low oil pressure at idle to do excessive clearance on the bearings but still run great. May just be a worn motor that is getting close to the rebuild stage, or a weak/worn oil pump. Fixing is it all depends on what you want in a truck, meaning if it is a daily beater use thicker oil
You really have to see what the pressure is before you start trying to "fix" the problem with thicker oil
If it is actually worn bearings or pump the thicker oil will help for a while but it isnt a cure-all. It will give better pressure indications, maybe stick to the bearings better but it is only putting off the inevitable failure.
That is if it isnt just a bad sender for the light.
Get a guage and check the pressure for piece of mind at least. Heck by an aftermarket guage for $20 and leave it installed all the time. Way better system than the "Oh My God the oil pressure is 0psi" Light
