Day,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
The transmission is the same for a 2 wheel drive and a four wheel drive.
The transfer case is bolted to the rear of the transmission for the difference.
All I can tell you about an automatic is it has to be from a diesel to fit a diesel, gas trannies will not bolt up.
The ones behind a Power Stroke motor will also fit behind a 7.3 IDI motor.
Also from what I have read, good luck on finding one for under 2000 dollars.

Well all I can say to that is: "If you do not try, you will not succeed".
I know here locally that A4OD rebuilds are over 3000 dollars most times.
One of the reasons I like my manual tranny.
You might do a search of the "Classifieds" and find something.
There is another post close to theis one where the guy says he bought a A4OD at a "Pick N Pull" salvage yard for 78 dollars.

I am taking mine in to the shop in the next week or so. The quote is going to be about 1000 to 1200 for a pull rebuild and reinstall. The truck is still driving with some slippage and missing shifts from time to time. Last summer I had it blow trans fluid out around the front seal. Just filled it back up later and drove it home. The rebuild will be complete replacement of worn parts and update the weak components.
