What is the proper torque for headers on a 64 f100 with a 292 y-block? are headers the same torque as exhaust manifolds? what is torque for both? Thanks in advance.
Robert
The factory spec for exh. manifolds is 23-28 ft. lbs.
That would be a good starting point for header bolts as well, as they are the same diameter & thread. The biggest issue with headers is to retorque them several times during the first week or two. If they are allowed to loosen & warp it will be very difficult to make them ever seal. Eventually they will take a set & stop loosening up so much.
I like to run a large flat file over the inside weld beads on the flange to true them up, & also make sure the ground weld bead is complete. Y headers are kind of a limited-build item by nature, but a lot of mass-production headers have gaps and/or pits in the ground bead.
If possible, it never hurts to run the file over the head port flanges too, or actually have a machine shop true them during a rebuild.
a tip to keep them from loosing up is to acutaly cut the the metal between the pipes itll let each tube warp diffretly and thell seal better and wont come loose as much
