When I started my truck, the first thing was a lopeing, it seemed like it lasted a long time but it was only like 10 secs..
What causes this and what is the fix ?
Has anyone else had this problem ?
Thanks
There are lots of posts of similar problems. I'm by no means the expert but the real experts here will want to know what ambient temps it does it at (below freezing?)? what oil you run? does it do it every time you start? any smoke with it? and does the tach move up and down with it or does it read at all?
I live in S. TX so the temp. was around 70.
I run Rotella oil.
It's only done it a couple of times, the other times it starts up smooth.
And the tach does move, up and down.
And no smoke at all, either on start up or on accelaration.
Mine is an early '99 the only mod it the Kwik filter.
MY early 99 had a loping problem after start up when you put the trans in drive and go foward a short distance and stop without 1st warming the engine up. This has been the case since the truck was new.. I switched a couple of months ago to Shell rotella synethic 5w40 and the loping has completely disappeared.. The oil to the injectors must be the problem..The dino oil 15w40 is just to thick in my opinion.. The outside temp has no affect on it at all.. I keep my truck in a warm garage at night and it would still lope after driving out of the garage in the summer time.. But, the synethic Shell has fixed the problem..
I think most PSD owners have had the "romp romp" start at least once. It's mainly the HPOP trying to pressurize with cold oil. Only once was I able to simulate the problem other than cranking, and that was when I blew the o-rings out on the HPOP. Right before I killed the engine enough oil had been spewed out that my truck had the loping idle, exactly like a cold crank.
At any rate the romps are temporary and seem to be pretty common. Synthetics tend to make the problem go away for most.
I had no idea the oil would cause this, especially since I live in S. TX with no real cold temps.. I may change to syn. Rotella.. I've heard that changing to syn. may cause an oil leak.. Any problems there ?
I had the same thing happen to me when I was in Tahoe recently. Truck sat for a few days, and went to start it at about 8 am one morning after the previous night had been down to about 5* and got the ROMP, ROMP, ROMP after it had cranked and fired. Sort of scared me, so after letting it do that for about five seconds I shut if down. It did it again, then the third time I gave it a little "gas" with the pedal once it fired and was ROMPING, and it cleared up fine, and was fine thereafter. This was with 15W-40 dino oil. Starvation at the HPOP, due to the cold, thick oil, I guess.

Maybe not. I too have had the romp romp, but only when it is cold. This could be glow plug related, especially in light of his quoted temperature. But it could be HPOP as well. Likely HPOP because while I have had it even after having the heater plugged in overnight, it doesn't seem as pronounced. But it will still do it when it's a real cold morning to go hunting.
last weekend i changed from 15w-40 rotella to 5w-40 synthetic Rotella, and the difference is OMG!
there is NO more romp romp romp. the truck cranks for a brief second, and fires over and no romp. the idle settles immediately. i love it. also think it runs smoother and quieter. maybe just because of new oil. but, i do notice the oil pressure comes up faster because of the nice cold flowing characteristics. $14.87 a gallon @ wally world.
