I have a 1999 Ford Ranger Supercab 4 door 2WD with 84,000 miles on it. A few days ago while coming home from work, I noticed a clunk coming from under the truck. It occurs under acceleration and deceleration. I asked on another forum and they weren't much help but said it could be the U-Joints.
I had them replaced on my '98 3.0L 4x4 Manual, and it resolved a "clunk" that I would have described as more of a "pong" sound like if you hit the hollow driveshaft with a rubber mallet. On my '98 4.0L 4x4 Auto, I am noticing that sound too, so I am suspecting that I'll have to do them on this truck too.
I think I'm going to have this checked out. It used to only make the noise every now and then...maybe 1 or 2 times during a trip home or around time. Today when I was driving home, I noticed it did it every time I would go around a curve, or accelerate or decelerate....or do pretty much anything. Its starting to get annoying.
Thanks....I do have one question...Is this problem coming from the rear of the truck? Mine seems to be coming from the front of the truck....Maybe I am wrong but it feels that way.
Then that would be what it is.....Does it need to be fixed or when i take it to the dealer will they just tell me its normal....I am thinking of trading this truck in and I don't want the salesman to think theres a problem with the vehicle when he drives it to vaule the truck.
if you follow that post, you can take the boot off and grease it. It will stay quiet for a few thousand miles. Definitely enough to trade it in. But if you do take it to a dealer, they will probably tell you it is normal, or they will replace the driveshaft with an aluminum one, which seems to cure the problem. I can't remember all the specifics, its been a while since i did mine, but it was pretty straight forward.
The allignment place told me it could be the ball joints....took it in and it turns out it was just a couple of bolts missing that hold the transmission in place. The other bolts were also loose allowing the transmission to slide forward making the clunk. They charged me 10 bucks to replace the bolts and tighten the old ones. Not bad. I am happy that I didnt leave it and have the transmission fall out.....
