What makes a Camper Special, special?

I have heard them mentioned and seen the emblems in a catalog. But what makes them a Camper Special? I have never actually seen one.

What makes a Camper Special, special?

Just go to the search area and type in *Camper special*

Look mainly in the 67-72 forum & the 73-79 forum.
There are about 10 threads related to this.

I found out it has been dis-connected temporarily again.

I found these by going page by page.

What makes a Camper Special, special?

Camper Specials were optional on the F250 and F350 pickups and Chassis Cabs except in '67 when you could still get it on a F100 (last year). Available in any trim level from the Custom up to the XLT, it is a package of options for utility, comfort and convenience. They varied a little over the years but basically here's what you got:

Sliding rear cab window (F250 only)
70 amp-hr battery
55 or 65 amp alternator
Oil pressure gauge
Ammeter
Bright 6" x 9" western long arm mirrors
Extra cooling package
Camper wiring harness (12 volt 7 wire sealed cable with connectors)
Dual horns
Camper Special emblems

Springs and wheel/tire combos varied depending on the GVW rating. The '68 and '69 Camper Specials also got Dietz marker lights on the front fenders. Although not mentioned in the brochures, the Camper Specials I've seen all had the aux. fuel tank and the tool storage box.

What makes a Camper Special, special?

My Camper Special uses a dual battery system with an isolator, so the alternator will maintain charge in both batteries but only use one to start and run the engine, leaving the other one free to run the camper and accessories. Kinda neat. It has a monster radiator and it even has a cooling loop that sticks up off the power steering pump.
The rear end has an extra leaf in the springset, and it's longer and thicker than normal. It also has 2 gas tanks. Those are the main differences.
The only thing I don't have is that wiring loom for the camper. Where can I get one of those?
I like my truck. If you run into a Camper Special for a good price, buy it.

What makes a Camper Special, special?

I installed an aftermarket Isolator a while back with a second battery. I did this because I intend to get a drop in camper for my 70 F-100. I have a set of frame-to-axle airbags to install and I was thinking of getting a rear sway bar. I was also thinking of replacing the 302 with a 351 W on the FMX to help with the weight.
This is why I was asking about the camper specials.

I scanned the pages from the sales brochure showing the equipment on a Camper Special, and the various GVW specs, they're at

Home (1970FSeriesSalesBrochure)

Welcome to FTE

You are correct, this mirror is difficult to find NOS (New Old Stock), or used.

This mirror was available for all 1967/72 F100/350's, not just for Camper Specials.

C7TZ17696F .. Western Mirror-Stainless w/Support Arm / 6" x 10" Mirror Head / Obsolete

No Ford Dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.

A few of the mirror heads (C7TZ17723A) can be found NOS, but that's about it.

ANTIQUE AUTO SUPPLY in Arlington TX has ONE = 817-275-2381.

ED BENNETT FORD PARTS in Lebanon PA has ONE = 717-272-8762.

BOB ALLEN FORD in Overland Park KS has ONE = 800-676-0675.

No other Ford Dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.

The F250 2WD frame is the same 1967/72 whether it's a Camper Special...or not.

The Camper Special package came standard with multiple items that were optional on all other F250's except for the pigtailed Camper wiring loom, which plugged into a separate plug in the taillamp loom.

This taillamp loom is unique to Camper Specials, the other F250's didn't have the separate plug.

Didn't the F250 Camper Specials also come equipped with front disc brakes?
