I have recently developed a knock in my engine. I have a 2002 ford explorer sport trac with the 4.0 sohc engine with 95,000 miles on it. it sounds as if the knock is coming from the right side of the engine or passenger side. I have replaced the timing chain tensioner on the front of the engine from advice of a friend but the knock is still there. I tried pulling plug wires while it was running to see if it was a certain cylinder but it was still there. I even removed the belt from the engine thinking it might be one of the accesories but the knock is still there. My next option is trying to change out the rear timing chain tensioner, but looks as if i may have to pull the engine to do that. Does anyone have any other suggestions before I embark on doing that. The engine is not missing while running and I cant tell that there is much of a loss of power when going down the road. Im almost positive its not a rod or lifter, if it were I would certainly be losing power and see a drop in oil preasure, I think. Please help me because I am running out of ideas and desperately need my sport trac back up and running.
My 97 4.0 SOHC "knock" sound I was using 5w30 oil and only when the engine was hot, so run a engine flush and replaced the oil with 15w40 Delo and filter. But our temp. never drops below 2 deg C and goes up to 36.
Have you done a compression test, to check to compare different cylinders?
