To our friends down in Oz

A major cyclone with 185 mph winds (gusting) slammed into Queensland state...

Here's hoping our friends are OK!

I saw this on the weather channel.

They said it was considerably stronger than Katrina. I hope the Aussie coast where it his is a deep water coast, not shallow like the gulf.

This also got me wondering, whats the diffrence bettween a cyclone (what hit aussie), Typhoon, and a Hurricane.

Same things all, just diffrent part of the world. Hurricanes are in the GoMexico, Atlantic, and eastern pacific

Typhoons are in the western pacific.

Cyclones are in the indian ocean, and austraillia.

Just some food for thought, we aren't the only ones that get these things in the states. Hope everyones all right down there, sounds like a bad one.

Cyclones spin backwards, like the Aussie's inner ears

By the way, hurricanes are "cyclones" too...

But they certainly spin backwards down there

Good point And if the inner ears ring true here too, than that would explain a LOT

Technically, a Typhoon, Hurricane, and Tornado are all cyclones.

Well, they drive on the wrong side of the road anyway... who ever heard of a right-hand-drive Falcon?

G'day from downunder,
That cyclone only hit the upper east coast, not anywhere important, most of the population in that part of the country are either to dopey from the humidity or too stoned from the drugs to realise that anything out of the ordinary was happening.

To dopey or stoned to care about the cyclone, hum, sounds like New Orleans all right.

Yes.

I had read a story from cyclonelarryaftermath.blogspot.com or some site like that where a couple wanted to rent a boatat 4pm the day before the storm while all the boats where being towed into inlets farther from the coast. The couple insisted, after being rejected, on renting the next morning--in the middle of the storm!

There is another storm coming towards Queensland last I checked...need to google for a pacific ocean satellite pic to refresh my memory.
