Does anyone have a cabover camper that hangs over the rear of their truck, and also tow a boat? I was told by a salesman that if I were to buy a new truck, to request one without the tow hitch, as they are not strong enough to add an extension to in order to compensate for the extended rear of a camper. He recommended a Reese aftermarket, states much more heavy duty. Anyone have experience?
Looked up Reese class iv and v, looks like 12000lb capacity, but with 1200lb tongue wt capacity. If an extender reduces tongue cap. by 50%, still leaves 600lb. capacity. Boat will be either a 22 or 25 ft tritoon, max 4000-5000 total weight boat/motor/trailer. Unsure of tongue wt.
reese makes a titan reciever with a 2.5 reciever that take a bigger and stronger and longer extension. the rating is 15.000 pounds. i have a lance 1020 camper and easily pull a jeep, but have never tried a trailer yet. need to get some tension cab;es/chains welded to the reciever and then to the extension for extra side to side stability.
forgot to mention that the titan is a class 5 reciever. also the guy who owned the camper before me had a 1999 2 wheel drive 350 and towed a 3,000 pound bass boat behind it.
Look into a company called Blue Ox. They make the extenders (not the cheap Reese / Wally World crap), some really nice stout pieces. I have an extended 8" drop for mine (a pic is in the gallery) and it's rated for 10K. They have the straight ones as well, I just needed the drop to accomodate the lift.
Here is a link to the site. This is the page with the drop receivers, but if you look about half way down, you see the the 13 - 15" extensions. Part Number BX88160
For the ultimate hitch for camper hauling, check out the Superhitch: http://www.torklift.com/p.php?w_page=superhitch
You get a full 12,000 lb capacity, even with the extension. I have a 12 foot camper for my F350 and bought this hitch to be ready to haul toys behind my truck. Regretably, I have not been able to buy any toys so I can't tell you how good it works. I have read nothing but positive reviews from people that have this hitch and have towed with it (check www.irv2.com in the slide-in forum).
I bought my extension at Cabeala's it works great if you are real concerned about tongue weight then move the boat back a little on the trailer just keep in mind to much will cause it to start swaying. The one I bought is not a cheap one and it will do the trick.
I am in the same boat and would like to know what the formula is to calculate the tongue weight factor when using a 2 foot long draw bar? If anyone knows the formula please send it, thanks.
You may want to consider www.torklift.com and look at their superhitch and long draw bars....very expensive though. I am looking at going to this system for my 2008 F350 4x4 diesel crew cab long box SRW with a 9.5 foot Bigfoot camper.
Many westerners use this system with their campers and horse trailer setups.
my buddy has the superhitch listed above. pulls a jeep on a car hauler no problems. can't believe the toon weighs much more than that setup. we did 3000 miles in october and it pulled like a dream. i was impressed.
