4X2 4X4 conversion 89 F150
Ok don't get your panties in a bunch I know it's generally not a great idea to try making a 4X2 into a 4X4 but the way I see it I want an NV4500 tranny in my F150 and probably a non-stock transfer case so the way I see it starting with a 4X4 wouldn't be a big difference because I'd be changing all the driveline parts exept the diffs.
I've measured a few of my neighbours 4x4's and it looks like I can bolt up a pair of 4x4 I-beams in place of my 4x2 I-beams with no problem, of couse with the appropriate spindles and rims. I should also mention that I have a 6" SkyJacker lift and that the new radius arms have shims to fit the I-beams as I think the 4x4 I-beams might be a bit taller.
Is this a compleatly insane idea or is it not that difficult to do. I was also wondering should I use a standard ford t-case or is there a much better one I should use behind an NV4500? I was planning on keeping my 8.8" rear diff because I've put in a lockright locker. I figure I'll probably need custom drive shafts but I'll worry about that later.

Personalize Your Truck...
Any way that pleases you.
Did you begin this idea with a full plan including the intended use of the truck? The intended use must include the hardest beating you'll ever, or regularly, put on your truck.
What you're considering doing is not that easy. It is, however, just "nuts & bolts" and can be done with enough funds and facility. The most important point is the fact that you want to do this.
Will the 8.8 rear hold together for what you intend to do with the truck? If you have any doubts, sell the 8.8 & put the "right" rear in.
Insanity is one (or more) persons' opinion. You've seen many different things done to cars & trucks and for whatever reason, it pleased the owner.
Think outside the box or get in line. You choose.
AL.
P.S. ... Did I forget to say.....WELCOME TO FTE !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ya I think you did say welcome, thank you.
As for tools, I installed my lift kit on my own (ok dad helped), and have most if not all the tools needed.
My 8.8" has held up so far fairly well. My intention is to have a rig that is mostly driven on the road but that I can have fun with in the mud on the weekend. Towing isn't out of the question but I don't have a trailer so it's not a big deal.
Those who say things can't be done shouldn't interfere with those who are doing it!<o></o>
On a technical note does anyone know how tall the I-Beam is where it attaches to the radius arm on a 4x4 89 F150? I want to see if my skyjacker Radius arms will accept a 4x4 I-Beam. I suspect it will but if anyone knows it'll save me harassing the neighborhood 4x4 owners.
<o> </o>
Thanks
Andrew
