I would think you find a 360 easier and cheaper. Just add crank and rods to make a 390. I have seen them given away. I know a guy that has a 360 for sale right now and has the C6 tranny to go with it.

I recently bought 2 trucks and each of them has a running 390.
I bought the F350 with a 390 2bbl/4 speed for $200 and drove it 90 miles to get home. It runs great.
I bought a F100 4x4 with a 390 4 bbl/C6/NP203 for $300. It runs, but isn't drivable becasue of an accident.
Check ebay in the parts cars category, then set your search to show the items near you. Tell your friends what you are looking for, they may come across something.
