2003 PSD Using LOTS of Oil
I have a good friend who is struggling with his 2003 F350 PSD. He recently had an exhaust leak that according to the mechanic caused his turbo to fail. After replacing the turbo, the truck ran fine for about a month. Went to go to work and truck started then quit. Truck would restart but only run for a few seconds then stall. Ended up being 8 quarts low on oil. Truck has no leaks... We changed the oil, and the truck ran fine for about a week. Checked the oil at the end of the week and was 4 quarts low. Again no leaks on the driveway or under truck. When you rev the motor in neutral you get a puff of black smoke and on about every third rev you will get a small puff of blue smoke. Truck has about 150000 miles and has chip, exhaust, intake, and guages. Truck runs great!!! Where is the oil going??? Obviously with the blue smoke visible in the exhaust it is being burned in the motor. BUT 4 quarts in a week I would think would be lots of smoke and it is just not there??? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

my guess is that the turbocharger is passing oil (not the CCV gasses, but rather engine oil. the seal at either end of the turbo shaft may have a leaky seal, for the intake, it would be in the intercooler and all intake pipeing, that passes oil into the engine. for the exhaust, if it would pass the seal, raw oil will be burnt by the temperature of the housing and exhaust gasses, and go right out the pipe. is there oil in the exhaust system?
another check- is the coolant level good, is it still green, or is there a whiteish tint to it?

Thank you for the quick reply. I checked the tailpipe, and there is no liquid oil , just black sooty powder (just like mine). I will check the intake pipes tomorrow. Would they have changed the seals when they put the new turbo on??? Also..Have you ecer heard of an exhaust leak causing a turbo to fail???

Sounds to me like turbo oil seals. Then I remembered you have some engine mods,,
Does it have a catalytic converter or muffler? - oil will pool there before you see tell tail leaks.
I had bad turbo seals on my rebuilt motor, no oil in the up pipes but a good coating inside the housing and the down pipe. 4" straight exhaust, so it was dribbling out the tail pipe.
