Well, what the poll has shown is that a CPS fails 45% of the time! (33 of 73)

That is a very commom problem. If 45% of all ford Taurus' or Honda Accords (or other High volume selling vehicle) made between 1999 and 2003 experienced intermittant stalling the NHTSA would be ALL over the manufacturer! But diesel F-series is a much smaller market segment.

It never even occurred to me to contact NHTSA. It will in the future!

F250 CC long manual tranny 50350 miles replaced mine after 107 * hot day comming up I 80 out of sacto with 1000# trailer because the #$^&*(!@$%^&* CPS went heat sensitive. let her sit for an hour and you got an hours travel. when she died, usually at idle lost everything, almost hit someone at freeway on ramp. thank god for trailer brakes.

I had mine go out with about 35k on the clock. Only had the truck about 3 days when it quit. luckily I was able to coast into a gas station parking lot. I had my kids with me and of course forgot my phone. I did get it to restart, but it quit again right away. Had to have it towed, it was covered under warranty Ford paid for towing and repair.

I have to say, I was pretty disappointed watching my new truck being hauled away. At least the truck that took it was PSD! It's been fine since, I have a spare cps in the glove box.

I have replaced it on a 99 f250 with 76000k and shortly after the tranny went out also with about 78k...dealership said the torque converter was burnt and I dont even pull. I only have a superchip programmer but have not put it back since the rebuilt.

Early '99 250. Mine went out at about 211,000 miles. On my way home in town, lots of stop lights and curves when engine died. Managed to get pulled over mostly off the street. Did not know what was wrong, waited a few minutes and it cranked back up. 30 seconds later, dead again. Took two more stops to get home, total distance -- less than a mile. Did internet search and found this place. Then searched here & found problem. Found CPS @ O'reilly's (forget how much) with lifetime warranty. No problems since.

A poll of 73 people is not enough to make that conclusion. You need a poll of a few thousand before you can start making that conclusion. Plus, this is a place folks come if you have a problem you're looking to solve, like a CPS, so one would expect that the percentage of failures among members here would be higher than the average. That's why it's important for the 33 here (45 now) to register their complaint with NHTSA. If there are 45 here and 31 already filed with NHTSA and the 33 here haven't filed yet, I'd sure hope they do. Reading through these posts it seems like there have been a lot of close calls that could have been tragic. And if we can more than double overnight the 31 that NHTSA already has I think that would be awesome. Not only that, NHTSA is only investigating the 99-01 PSDs. There have been posts here from folks with newer trucks than that. If NHTSAs number of complaints suddenly rises and includes the newer trucks, they'll have to widen the investigation.

2003 F250 at 77K and I have not replaced the CPS. I did, however, have Ford replace a faulty oil pan (popular problem) and I suppose it's conceivable they replaced the CPS as a precaution w/out telling me.

qman -you are absolutely correct. This informal poll is not a large enough sample to be statisically significant. The sample is compromised by being wieghted heavy on people experiencing problems and looking for solution. No goverment action should be taken as a result of polls like this.

But because a good amount of people have responded to having had NO failures, I feel that this poll is significant, on an informal basis. After 103 respondents, 49 have had to replace the cps (47.6%) and 41 have not. (39.8%) (13 people did it as a precaution) Even on the informal basis, with the statisical problems you mentioned, this is a big problem. However, it is not accurate of me to quote an exact number, as you pointed out.

(Humble Bow)

My original point was that we can guess what the conclusions of the NHTSA without spending huge$$$$$ just by the results offered here! And NHTSA saying they have 31 reports is OUR fault for not reporting. I know it never occurred to me to so and it never occurred to expect more from Ford about a part that obviously fails more often than it should. Both those things have changed.
