i got a 460 from a salvage yard and im pulling it apart and this the the first ford motor that im going to rebild and i am woundering what to look for during disasembly to know if it is rebuildable? where can i find the block casting numbers? the valve covers say 460 out of a 76 ford truck and the heads are d3ve a2 i belive i will check my in formation later today. and any tips would be grately aprecated thanx.
i found the block casting and its dive-6015-a2b
and the casting # for the heads are d3ve-a2a
what is this i good block casting? and are the heads good casting #?
the engine will have a comp cam xtream 4x4 210/218 kit with the springs and every thing, also headers if i can find a good set of fenderwell exit headers, edelbrock preformer 460 intake and a ebelbrock 750 cfm with vacum secondarys. what will the tq and hp specs be? and about how good will my mpgs be?
also what flywheel do i need for a manual transmission?
my last question is how do u set the rocker arms on a pedistal mount or are they all the same?

D1VE is a common block and your D3 heads are 97cc chambers. During disassembly, keep everything including all the old gaskets. These may be useful later for reference. Wash and clean everything and spray WD-40 on all metal parts to keep the rust off. Don't force the pistons out of their bores. A ridge has built up at the top of the cylinder and sometimes the rings will catch there and keep the piston from coming out. The machine shop will remove this ridge and hone the cylinders to the proper size. What does your budget look like? What type vehicle will you use this engine in. The rockers are the pedstle type and roller rockers are available for D3's. But unless you are building a race or pulling engine you do not need these now and you can always add these typr parts later. Building a race engine will cost upwards of 4K. A overhaul with quality parts will cost around 3K.
L&L is a very good source for your headers .You need a 1978 or earlier flywheel for your engine the balance changed in 1978/79. Your engine is internally balanced.Make sure you are not sold a 351M/400 flywheel either or you will be building a shaker.
Get a 360/390 flywheel or buy an aftermarket steel 429/460 flywheel of ebay. There are no 1978 or earlier flywheels except the ones that came on four speed cars in the late 60's to early 70's that had CJ's and SCJ's and they are hard to find.
BTW a 351/400 flywheel won't even bolt up to a 429/460 crankshaft.
"BTW a 351/400 flywheel won't even bolt up to a 429/460 crankshaft."
Better go out and try that a 351m/400 flywheel will bolt onto a 429/460 but it wont balance it .That is a common mistake that people make when swapping 351n/400 for a 429/460 the flywheel/flexplate bolts right on .
Well I went out and tried it and guess what. The 351m/400 flexplate would not go onto the 460 crankshaft. The center hub diameter of the 460 flywheel is about 2.490(used cheap calipers)and the 400 hub is 1.750. Then the bolt holes on the 460 measure about 4.225 across center to center and the 400 measures 3.000.
The common mistake is using a late model ex.balance flywheel on an internal balance motor. A 360/390 flywheel will bolt right on and is internally balanced.
Sorry for the hijack guys, can anyone put a part number on here from advanced auto, auto zone, or napa for a 390 flywheel? The reason im asking is so I get the one with the correct tooth count. Also, isnt it a 302 bushing or bearing, or does it matter? Thanks a buch, Dave.
Sorry greenhighboy I took apart a '78 150 with a 460 and a NP435 stick everything else was factory except the 460 .It must have had a FE flywheel.I also went by the book How to Rebuild FORD V8 Engines by Tom Monroe which says
"Therefore ,you can't install a 429 flywheel on a 400 and expect it to be balanced, even though the flywheel will fit both engines. The engine will not be in balance.Vice-verce,a 400 flywheel will put a 429 out of balance."
Sorry Mom always said "you can believe everything you read" guess she was right. I never listened to Mom real well.Have scars to prove it.Well my bad, force me to do 3 laps of the FTE yard in a Camaro. And I will say 10 Hail Henrys tonite.

Reason: miss spellings
That book has quite abit of mis information in it including casting numbers. However it is a very good source for rebuilding an engine because it goes step by step and has alot of good pictures.
Mudder, I think the tooth count is 184. I have one and can count to be sure.
greenhighboy is right I wouldn't trust anything out of the book and if he told me Ford built the 429 engine I would start to suspect that chev actually makes it and painted it blue. I wish people would quit looking at that book, cause it then takes hours to convince people that most of what is published in it is BS
It was the combination of the book and that 460 1/2ton that got me.I have found several goof-ups in the High Perf Fords 221-460 book, I still trusted the 335/385 book UNTIL NOW.
