Battery light on and off

Hello,

I have a 1998 exp, 4.6, 119K on it. The battery light just started to come on. It appears to flicker on when the rpm goes over 2500 or 2800 rpms. Once the rpms drop below 2500, the battery light goes out.

All the gauges are at the same. I do NOT get a flicker in volts/oil pressure/tempurature gauges. The battery is nice and strong.

What could be causing this light to go on?

Sounds like you have a bad alternator. A rotor wire is probably broken and looses contact.

I replaced the alternator and all is great. I bought it on-line at Checker for $5 cheaper than the store had and picked it up at Checker 30 minutes later.

I disconnected the air line (I left the 2 rubber inserts) and bent it out of the way. I did have to take off the radiator hose and bend that out of the way. I unclipped the spark plug wires and moved them.

It was 3 bolts and it took me about 1.5 hours to do. It was my first time changing an alternator and it was pretty easy. When taking off the belt, you need a 1/2 drive for the tensioner pully and a 3 foot pry bar for some leverage.

Good luck.

thanks for the info, it's been a while for me also. i was hoping i wouldn't have to mess with the radiator hose, but its the nature of the beast i guess.
