On my 57 styleside the tailight bezels are majiorly dented up. I don't know if anyone knows what I'm talkin about, but the reare roll pan blocks any rear acess to pound these out.Does anyone know how I could take these dents out without cutting up the rear end of my truck.
(I'm guessing there is no way, I had a post on the 48-60 and I'll I got in reply was that I would have to cut up my rear.)
Drilling holes to pull out the dents with a slide hammer can work very well. It`s about the only way other than using a plasma or possibly a zip cut to carefully remove the sections for the repair. Cutting off the sections to straighten the metal gives the best access for the work. This one way to avoid using too much bondo.
No matter what method is used it will still be a time consumming task.
Lockups may have a better answer if he sees this thread.
I talked with a fella at Super Run this past summer and what he did was cut both ends off, lay them out and pound them back into shape. Then rewelded. Lots a work
That`s what I was thinking but you put it so much clearer. It`s lot of work no matter how it`s properly done.
How where your`s when you got your truck?
Mine are dented top to bottom and maybe the tail light panel was cut off and poorly pounded out because there is a non factory weld all up that seam.
Again the previous owner not doing it right the first time
I just did battle with those **** dents again on Sunday. It took me all day to achieve not a thing. I'll try once more but Mabye I'll just say heck with it. I know once I get them out some idiot will rear end me or something like that.
If it is sheetmetal. I will weld on a pice of metal with brass in the crease and hook a comalong to it and gently ratchet it out. Sometimes I have to do this a couple of times in differrent places. This usually works for me. It is a old trick from the body shop days. That way we did not have to cut out or try and hammer the dents out from an impossible to get at place. Also we had hydraulic wedges that would also push these areas out.
Yesterday because of the freezing rain I had neither school or work.
So with a above freezing temp. I gave her one last shot. The passenger side I eventually got with the Porta Power, but I cut the bottom half of the driver side out (unwillingly) and put it in the hydralic press. I still haven't remounted it but I am finally pleased. (until next time)
