Let me say this, both ways the top and bottom r a mother fu**** to do. I'm currently doing one now, I'm a full time mechanic from the bottom. Cv axle comes out and there still isn't enough room,.everyone says that's all u have to take out. Wrong, u have to take the axle out, and the alternator bracket out also, and then still it is really hard to get it out, ford messed up on the placement of it on these motors, literally no room to work, I would rather almost do a transmission replacement then this job. It takes me about 3 to 5 hours and I have 18 years experience. An the alternator bracket is kind of hard to take off as well the 2 bolts are easy it's the farthest bolt in back that is hard to get to. I used a 1/4 inch ratchet with a 3 i nch extension with 10mm socket. Then put all back together .and yes the plug on the alternator is hard to get off, loosen the alternator and take all 3 13mm bolts off first, then rotate it to were the plug faces up and get it off thru the top. It's easier that way. Both ways take about the same amount of time. I've done it from the top as well and you have to disconnect alot of hoses and the computer to do it that way. I hate doing them period.
