I have a '96 Ranger. I have a noise I get especially when I slow down, like a deep winding noise. Is it the bearings? The differential? Anybody else experience this noise?
My first thought would be a pinion bearing. Does it only do it during deceleration or during acceleration. Usually pinion noise is best heard under load whether positive(acceleration) or negative(deceleration).
It does it all the time; during accel and decel. I guess I hear it more during deceleration because the of the engine. A friend said the axle bearings might be shot, but I don't have 100% confidence in his oppinion.
Is there any "play" at the pinion/driveshaft. Can you wiggle it by hand? It could be axle bearings have you had the drums off the rear to check for stuff inside like a small rock or something? Did you check the fluid level in the differential?
So I decided to take it in to the local Ford dealer. The mechanic and I took it for a ride. he said it could be a couple of things. So he got it on the lift and concluded it was the drive shaft bearings. So next week I'll get that done. Thanks Red for the help.
