Clutch Recommendations??

96 f250 7.3 powerstroke 4x4 5 speed manual

Getting ready to replace my clutch, any recommendations. Also doing the pressure plate, throw out bearing and the rest....is the Ford stuff ok or just what do you guys recommend? Don't tow alot, but WANT something that will last.

If you don't plan on making gobs of power then I'd do a smf LUK clutch. The smf are a little louder then a dmf but a extra qt. of atf can fix that.

I've got a 96 did they all have the dual mass flywheel and how do you tell which it is.

The only mods I have are a bigger air filter and a few gauges.

What is the difference between smf and dmf?

SMF has no springs but the clutch plate does and make a lil more tranny noise

DMF has springs but the clutch plate don't and is quieter

I'll second Luk clutches, I have 190k on my hd clutch which I never would have thought would have lasted this long.

clays deal on a south bend clutch with a single mass flywheel is hard to beat, and pretty much all I install now with 0 complaints.

Get rid of the dual mass flywheel, gear rollover is not noticeable ever unless you are about to stall the motor out. People that complain about it should have just bought an auto to start with :-)

I have the LUK clutch on my Bronco with no issues so far. I haven't and won't be doing towing anytime soon, but I really like the clutch so far.

My dual mass flywheel was about to fall apart when I pulled the motor from the F-250 so I didn't want to have to worry about that happening ever. These 4x4 ZF5 transmissions are pretty hard to find, and a dual mass flywheel failing will pretty much guarantee it's demise!

Luk is probably the best stock replacement clutch, and the cheapest place to get it is Rock Auto. You can get the kit with the solid flywheel.

Was gonna say this. I just put a LUK kit in mine. It literally feels like I am driving a Honda Civic. It's a good clutch and gear rollover....what's that?

Haha yeah... I thought I had gear rollover until my friend purchased a 4x4 ZF5 powerstroke and I heard how quite it was in his. I then saw that my driver side downpipe was smashed against the firewall.... It's super loud. I hope it won't be too difficult to cut/bend that part of the firewall back.

Anyways, my friend barely had any noticeable gear rollover noise when we swapped his dual mass out for a LUK single mass flywheel.

I really like the LUK brand, I've had great success with it. My 91 Camaro had soo many clutch issues with the T5 transmission until I put a LUK clutch kit in it. For stock to mild applications, I think LUK is a great choice, and Rock Auto is a super cheap place to get it.

Thanks Guys. I just ordered the luk kit with solid mass flywheel for $269.00 free shipping from Parts Geek. I tried Rock Auto, it was same price but $40.00+ shipping so went with PartsGeek.

Thanks to all that helped me out here.

I have had two South Bend clutches in my truck and they have been very grabby. This last one has been in for about 3 mo with a lot of stop and go. (stock replacement). Hate trying to back my trailer with it. Most backing I have to get in low range to keep from beating the truck to death. Thinking about getting a luke and replacing it. Just my findings. Satisfaction with different clutches seam to be varied. Just put a luk in my sons jeep and it is great.
