In a Hurry to paint your rims?.......

I had a set of steel rims with chrome trim rings that had seen better days. The paint was chipping away. I found a faster way to repaint the rims without taking the tires off. After thoroughly washing and drying the tire and rim I carefully applied some tire shine product, by hand, to the tire sidewalls. There was no need to mask off the rubber. After I was finished priming and painting the wheels I used a cotton terry rag and wiped the overspray off the sidewalls with ease. And voila', I had a freshly painted wheel and already detailed tire to boot. It might not be the proper way, but it was quick and easy and the results were worth it.

Sounds like a good trick! Sometimes you gotta go with what works

I wasn't going to say it, but I decided to. It doesn't work!! The tire shine on the tires trick caused me nothing but more problems. I ended up running to Home Depot to pick up some MEK to remove the overspray. I finally decided that the only real way to spruce up those wheels is to pull the freaking tires off and prep 'em and paint 'em! Sounds like a good idea anyway! -Matt

Sorry to hear that it didn't work for you, Matt. What type of tire shine product did you use? Did you use it liberally or sparingly? I used Black Magic tire shine liberally, and believe me it worked great! Black Magic is the thickest tire shine product I've found and use. All the others I've tried are watered down and don't apply well with only one coat.

I have done that before but I used brake fluid. It worked pretty good.

I used what I have used for over 10 years and that was Formula 2001 tire shine. It has given me the shine I want on my tires (not too much, not too little...) I guess maybe I ought to buy some Black Magic and load it up. I'll have to try it again when I get the guts to have at it again.:

Just a note. I found out the hard way that the fumes from most tire or rubber dressings will cause fresh paint to fish eye. I once detailed a car before it had some paint work done on it. I shined the tires and all plastic and rubber in engine compartment. Send over to paint shop to have some lot damage repaired. 1/2 day later had one very upset painter. I now make sure to wash off all rubber dressings before I go near the car with paint. Live and Learn.

Man, that is the only way I paint my rear tractor rims! Removing a 14.9-38 tire is just too much. I usually use some cheap car wax to protect the rubber.
