New to diesel

I am in the market for a diesel truck (preferably this generation ford) and am currently looking at a 97 crew cab long bed. The truck i found has 310k miles and a rougher interior.

Spoke with the owner briefly and he let me know that the transmission was rebuilt 150k ago but the motor is all original aside from routine maintenance. Trans is a manual (not sure if these came 5 or 6 speed). Owner also told me the truck needs a couple of minutes to warm up but runs like a champ once its warm. He thinks it just needs glow plugs cleaned or replaced.

Truck is listed for 4000$ but he sounds flexible. Just wanted to feel you guys out before i pursue it further. Anything particular about these gen trucks that you should look at specifically?

Wouldn't be a bad price for that truck in my area. Definitely would try and talk him down some though. Rough running when cold could be a whole slew of things, but not necessarily reason to worry. I would expect to have to put a little money into it with that miles and condition though.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly with our nifty FTE What to Look for Guide. Until then, welcome to FTE!

Welcome! Yeah 4k in where I am is a great price. I paid a little over 6 for my ccsb when it had 355 k on it. But it was a Georgia truck with no rust (I live in the salt belt) so it was worth it to me. So yeah that's not out of line, but if you can negotiate a lower price than all the better.

As Rick said, rough when cold can be a number of things. the 5 speed is definatly a bonus in my book. I have the auto which is healthy right now, but I cringe the day I have to do anything to it.

Overall looks like a clean truck! The guys here are awesome! So any questions/concerns you have don't be afraid to ask! I believe there is a check list as well in the tech section of things to look at when purchasing a PSD.

Once again welcome!
