Angry camshaft position sensor (problem)

I have a 96' f-250 PSD. supercab 4x4, I have 177000 mi. My problem is it is eating up the cam position sensors it started sending out a trouble code for this a few days ago. OK here is the bad part this will be the FOURTH one I have put inin the past four years ????????? What could be the problem causing this ??????

to be honest there may not be a problem. these truck eat cps's. maybe you need to have the air gap checked but other than that it just part of being a powerstroke owner. one a year is excessive from what i hear but to the best of my knowledge not much you can do about it.

My CPS lasted 180,000 miles and now I am having issues with it again at 220,000. Has anyone tried this improved blue CPS? http://www.blackclouddieselperforman...54ed35c53d534b
Will it even work on the OBS psd?

Physically damaged, like the sensor is making contact witht the target ring, or they just quit working?

i read about a guy a few weeks back who was losing them every ten miles or so. he had a bearing worn on his cam and it was allowing it to walk forward and get to close to the cps messing with the magnet signal. doesnt sound like your case. try a blue and see if it holds up any better.

i am not sure about the blue sensor. check out the thread in the superduty diesel section and see the exodus of people that have since taken theirs back out. not enough is known about what this sensor does to for me to feel safe using it. i have seen conflicting reports on what it does to the timing. one very knowledgable guy did alot of testings (he an IH tech) and found that it retards the timing by a few degrees and some "think" it advances the timing. too much conflict and not enough testing done for me. but yes if you get the correct revision it will work in the OBS.

I put one on my '95 Tues.,seems the engine runs smoother and quieter. My MPGs had gotten awful before putting it on and I'm confident it's improved my mileage. The International dealer was about $40. cheaper than Ford.

My F-350 died on me while I was pulling up to a red light in a turn, what a scare to loose PS then. I suspect the CPS but all I have red in other forums is it is an intermittent problem. When it died, it died and would not restart even the next day. The glow plug will not come on either. Is it possible to ohm out the CPS or check it with a test light?

Cool

Just had mine replaced. 2nd one in 20,000 miles 96 F350. But the interesting thing was my truck didn't just die, it went into limp mode speraticly. Hence I did not think it was the CPS, my mechanic read the codes and it was the dastardly CPS

Thanks. I just found the CPS at an International Truck dealership for $101.69, here in Kennesaw GA. As an added plus their parts dept is open until midnight. Ford wanted $202. NAPA, who usually beats the pants off the dealer was $230.

What's the deal with these dealers? The Ford dealer I called sells them for $131.00.What is the excuse for one Ford garage to be $71. higher than another?

The hunt for the Almighty Dollar!!!!

Americanism means the virtues of courage, honor, justice, truth, sincerity, and hardihood: the virtues that made America. The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get-rich-quick theory of life.

Theodore Roosevelt
