Batteries

This weekend it was about 10 below when I tried to start my PSD. I didn't plug it in. Didn't get it started because the batteries wouldn't hardly turn it over. I haven't got the batteries checked, but to me this indicates I may have a bad battery. Any thoughts?

Thanks, Chad

At -12º F, not pluged in, running Rotella 5W-40, my F350 fired off with minor complaints. Even with thicker oil, yours should have turned over, even if you had GP issues. I would say it was time to have your batteries load tested. If you find only one weak, do yourself a favor and still replace both.

I had the same problem early this year. Batteries were only 2 years old, and they were 1000 cca. Replaced them with two fresh batteries, and if I forget to plug it in, it still spins like a top and fires right off.

Remember to replace them as a set. (pair) Since they are in parallel an old battery and a new battery paired together won't be as effective as two new bats.

When buying new batteries, what are the minimum specs I should be looking for?

Thanks, Chad

Typically 750 cca (cold cranking amps) at 0* for the psd's. Which will net you about 925-940 cca at 32*. So a 1000 cca battery would get you around 775 cca at 0*. Plenty for these trucks. Go much bigger the battery may not fit in your battery boxes/trays.

Good strong batteries are a MUST have for a PSD. The Intertsate Megatrons are a good choice.

I had a bad battery once. The truck turned over fine, but wouldn't start. It takes both to fire the engine.

i put two interstate megatrons in, and they work great. Even when it just got down to -20, still spun over and fired in 3 or 4 seconds. Even plugged in it sounded funky for a while, but it was running.
