What's the problem with new SD D60s and 40" tires?

I'd like to eventually run a 40+ inch tire on an 06 Superduty and heard a king pin d60 would be better. I really don't wanna do an axle swap since I alredy got a 60 in place. The truck is a PSD CC LB and will be used for mud and sand, very little rocks since it won't fit on the trails.

I was also researching 5.38s from Randys and ARB air lockers I know are available for the sterling 10.5 and front D60. Can the fully locked axles handle the tires or should I start thinking about rockwells or cancel the project?

the problem is the crappy bearing system, it doesnt handle big tires very well, and isnt a very cheap part.

I don't see why not we've all seen D60's in newer trucks running bigger than 40's but i'm sure someone with more knowledge than i will have a better answer than me. And yes they should handle them if your afraid of the axles breaking you can upgrade the axles to 35 spline but right now as long as you don't get on it while having your steering cranked over that's when axles break or ujoints tend to let loose. But since it's just mud or sand you shouldn't have any problems with your existing D60.

those unit bearings wont like the tires much, but the new superduties have 35 spline inners as well as outers, so torque wise they wont care

yeah, the problem wont be power, like ko said, theyve got 35 in and out, and they also have a larger tube diameter now, with a bigger nuckle, so if you wanna roast all 4 stock tires, go for it, but id be leary of going very big.

So the unit bearings will wear quick and not cheap to replace, is this correct so far?

Any aftermarket parts that I could upgrade to if the factory ones eventually break? It'll probably tow a small toyhauler as well...

you want 40 pluss inch tires, and you want to pull stuff? those usually dont work together very well.

I'll drive slow and lower the gearing than stock equivalent. I've researched the dynatrac as well and heard positive and negative things, simply looking for more opinions.

I did the Dynatrac kit on my 99 F350 and I will do it on my 05 at the first sign of trouble from the bearings.
It converts the bearings to the older style servicable bearings found on the pre99 trucks. It uses all factory parts, with the exception of the spindle, so replacements in the future will be easy to get.

i concur with davebowman... the dynatrac kit is a must have on any superduty regardless of tire size IMO.. i had a buddy lose his stock unitized bearings and when i seen his bill i went ahead and ordered the kit... you won't have to toast to many of the stock units to pay off the dynatrac setup..

One thing to think about with the 05 & 06 superduty is they run a deep offset wheel, what I mean is the center line of the tire is closer to the center line of the upper & lower ball joints, therefore less stress then the older (98-04) superduties, I think the 05&06 unit bearing with the proper backspacing will last longer than the previouse models, just my .02

I believe its about $1700 for the complete kit, but don't quite me on that. I bought mine off Ebay for $970 from a guy who just installed it, then drove 1000 miles and rolled the truck.
