oil pan removal question

Can anyone tell me if I need to lift the motor to remove my oil pan in order to change the gasket? It bareley clears the I beams by two inches. I'd hate to have to do that. Thanks,
Aaron

Welcome to FTE and yes most likely you will need to lift the motor up to get extra clearance but only an inch or two.

I would use an engine hoist in the front and just leave the tranny connected. you sould be able to.

I've heard of people just using the 1 piece gasket and just taking all the bolts out and letting the pan just sit there on the cross member and then work the gasket around and in place. The 1 piece is less chance of a leak too. just my .02. But if you want to take the pan completely out of the truck yes you do have to jack the engine up.

Its better to remove the pan completly (for better surface prep) by lifting the engine about 1-2 inches and remove the oil pump drop it in the pan and pull both at the same time. This worked for me a couple weeks ago and I only had to lift the left side of the engine about an inch but I have thin hands. It can be a little frustrating putting it back together with the dist shaft an all but is very doable. In fact it was easier without the dist in the engine.

A trick I use for lining up the distributor shaft in situations like this is to cut the heads off of a couple of 5/16 bolts and screw them into the oil pump mounting bolt holes to use as guides. Slide the oil pump onto these studs and into place, hold it in place with one hand while with the other hand unscrew one of the studs (make them so that about 1" sticks out) and screw in bolt. Then the other bolt.
